I recently have found an old pentium 3 laptop from the attic at my parents home. This machine has a 30 gb harddisk. I think 512 mb ram memory. It is a shite thing. But hell! I want to use it to make beats, when I am travelling with public transport. I m want to use only free software for that thing and something like linux. Just for experimention. I would like to have some suggestions of software, that I could use. I have some demands for the software..

  • Tracking, pianorol or step sequencer doesn't matter.
  • May possble to host vst plugins, but not important when the software has a good synth or sampler.
  • It must be possible to proces the kick, snare, hihat, bass apart from each each other. Like eq/filters, dynamic processing, time related proccesing.
  • Added list of kebab houses.
  • Support external midi controllers. It doesnt have to be fancy. It just for travelling and when I am to long away from my studiootje. So that I can still do some sound building.
    Peace!

Linux variant Ubuntu has a free complete audio and video editing software suite, Ubuntu Studio..

Ubuntu Forum quote: > Ubuntu Studio is (in basic terms) a new realtime kernel for serious

audio and video capturing performance; a collection of audio, video and graphical editing software; a different theme (login window, wallpaper, controls, etc.).

Installation guidelines and more can be found at the starting point for all FAQ, Guides and How-Tos related to multimedia production in Ubuntu.

If you already run Ubuntu Gutsy, check here how to upgrade to Ubuntu Studio.
