Hi folks,
I'm planning to get myself some new speakers and audiocard for my studio. Currently i'm working with a 5.1 system from creative. Very nice speakers to watch movies and stuff but I've noticed that they aren't that good for producing.
I don't really have budget in mind but i want to stay under 500€ (speakers and soundcard)
What i want to know if it's better to save some more money (saving will be tough since I bought a house) or can I get a descent install for 500?
Be a nice civilian and let me know.
Cheers
carbura
depend of your expectations on a long term... is it better to buy a cheaper system waiting for a good one? For me I would prefer buying 2 good speakers and later 2 others and a sub, during this time, I'll have 2 good speakers for my work.
To produce, it's the better solution. But finally it depends what you need... if you prefer watching movies... ;)
as monitor's i'm using cheapo behringer truth's actives. they do the trick for me but i have no experience with pro stuff to compare.
for the soundcard, it really depends on what you need. pci/usb/firewire, number of i/o's, mic pre's, etc. i use a MOTU 828mk2 which is absolutely fantastic but way over your budget. a bit smaller is the UltraLite, but still more expensive.
Well, for about exactly 500€ you can buy my setup, of which I'm very pleased. I have the Alesis M1 MK2 active monitors (you can buy them the cheapest on mrgooddeal.be). For soundcard I have the terratec phase 28 (24/96, asio2, 8 jack outs, 2 jack ins, digital outs, midi in/out) for 160€.

Don't forget that out of itself, any 5.1 speaker set is just that, a good stereo set for movies and all. I coupled it a few years back with a Hercules external sound card; Set me back about 300 euro, but the sound was crispy-clear with everything I did, including live recordings. But of course if you have money to burn then I'd buy real recording material as stated above.
I myself use the Fostex NF-1 , but they aren't in production anymore... They are as good as the big line from Mackie,I must admit I bought them at a good price (650 euros ), because I knew the vendor at the store ( normally they were 1300 euros, pretty much for passive monitors)
In the lower price range I can recommend KRK's budget monitors...
except for a laptop, buy a pci card!! lill active monitors, bandarlog solution is not bad!! my soundsystem dont cost more than 500 i think, and im very pleased ! DONT EVER BUY FUKING 5.1 CREATIVE SHIT , the worst thing u can do, it is NOT what a producer need. Often best prices are in Deutchland. a good shop : www.musicstore.de
there are many offers and opportunity, so be shure to chek different shops, sometimes prices may change a lot! good luck too :D
Indeed, do not buy creative... and again indeed, check our german friends for sharp prices... active or passive is a long discussion, just take a cd with music you know very well and listen to several boxes, then make your choice...

Perhaps for speakers you could have a mixer or something like that linked to your pc and then add some decent "normal" speakers from, say, JBL or something? Because I don't quite trust the "direct to pc" speaker systems that exist nowadays.
JBL is renowned to produce high-quality sound, but only the genuine orange label ofcourse!!!
Oh by the way I have (cheap) creative gear so shoot me! I'm planning to get rid of the speakers at least though because they're fucked up. Gotte save up some money first though :)
yeah, i'm also looking for moni's+soundcard, and what i have on my wishlist for the moment are KRK rp8 and a Terratec Phase 88 rack. for the soundcard i'd take the pci-version, since i read the topic's about firewire<=>pci here on the forums. in total it'll cost about 1100-1200 euro....so all the money i 'll work for in september will be flushed with one click on my homebank :p but i'd rather buy a more expensive set with which i'm save for years then a cheap <500euro that is good for only a few years (i'm studying for audio-engineer so that requires higher standards already 8( ?( 8( )
btw: i've read many good things about that terratec, anyone has experience with it?
