here's a very good article on electronic live performance and laptop performance in particular by robert henke: http://www.textura.org/reviews/henke_liveperformance.htm

the issue of performing music that has been composed in a non-realtime manner is something i struggle with myself. the most live of my gigs are indeed the ones where i just have my machinedrum and monomachine hardware sequencers and play very direct abstract techno/electronica. but how to play my much more complex and sophisiticated triphop trax composed in ableton? if i perform just with my laptop i quickly get into the 'tape concert' field where all i (can) do is tweak some fx and mix the volume levels. what i'm working on now to get over this is a triphop gig with live band. some parts play from the laptop/ableton while others are played by the live musicians. now comes another issue: how to follow improvisations of the musicians with ableton? not easy! at the moment the musicians follow the structure set out by the ableton composition. in the future i want to break away from this to be able to play more freely and improvise.
