8:00 pm AMON TOBIN - FOLEY ROOM SHOW (IN 7.1 SURROUND SOUND) (Can.) It's taken a while: but AMON TOBIN, our favourite sound manipulator, is back! With his previous albums he earned a place in of honour in the 'electronica greats' wall of fame to which Boards Of Canada, Autechre and Aphex Twin also belong. His yet to be released album Foley Room immediately made a lasting impression on us. Following his soundtrack (Chaos Theory from 2004) to the video game Splinter Cell, Tobin decided to rethink his manner of composing. Instead of sampling vinyl, he let himself be influenced by Foley artists, those who operate out of the Foley room, a space where sound effects are recorded for films. Foley artists use the inspiration of the moment to make just the right music for a film scene. With this given in the back of his mind, Amon went out into the world to register a collection of sounds (animals, motors, ..). These were then combined with Tobin's music and contributions from the like of The Kronos Quartet and Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot).

Although the recording process was pretty experimental, this album is no exercise in avant-garde music. Consider it as a homage to the long history of musique-concrete compositions. Since his debut 'Adventures In Foam' under the name CUJO (a name he borrowed from a book by Stephen King) and his debut 'Bricolage' (under his own name), Amon still hasn't dropped a stitch. His releases remain inspiring. His sound remains threatening, infected by jazz, jungle & bossa nova (his Brazilian blood), and above all unique.

Please Note: the performance itself will consist of the screening of the docu/short film 'Foley Room: Found Footage' (20 min.), a listening session (in the dark!) with tracks from Foley Room (20 min.) and a live dj-set with visuals by Amon (1h 40 min.).

DUBSTEP was the sound of 2006 and we'll bet our necks that the tendency will continue into 2007. Dubstep (not to be confused with the related genre 'grime' in which rap is often used) is driven by minimal, truncated and dark sub-bass - something dub pioneer King Tubby would have been keen on - mixed with touches of suppressed drum n bass or even hip hop. Although it germinated in 2001, it was only in 2006 that dubstep made the crossover from dub-plates (which only circulate amongst DJs) to fully-fledged albums and so grew out of its underground status. There were three essential albums last year, which provided the breakthrough for dubstep: KODE9 + THE SPACEAPE ('Memories Of The Future'), BURIAL ('Burial') and SKREAM ('Skream!'). Get a hold of the series 'Dubstep Allstars: vol.1-4 (on Tempa) and the compilation 'Warrior Dubz' from (also BBC 1 producer) Mary Ann Hobbs (Planet Mu) too and you'll have a complete dubstep-initiation.

SKREAM (real name: Ollie Jones) is barely in his 20's and already a star in the genre. Having grown up in Croyden (like old friend Benga), he helped establish the foundation of dubstep. He started making tracks at 15 years of age. He is also the most productive dubstep-producer at the moment, he says he has more than a hundred tracks on his PC that he still hasn't released. His best-known tune is without a doubt Midnight Request Line, which was more or less the anthem of the dubstep-scene. Skream and sub-bass: call it a perfect marriage. By the way, that injection was given to him by his brother who was a member of the Internatty Crew to which junglist Grooverider also belonged. Wanna bet you change tack?
