General quality on Ebel

I read almost every forumthread... you must have noticed this as well. It shoud also be a topic to be discussed when we - mods and admins will meet. A lot of us are complaining/concerned about the general quality of songs posted on Electrobel.

I'm staring this thread to hear constructive ideas on what we can do to improve general quality without touching the basic idea that every user should get equal chances and deserves as much attention and constructive comments as others.

I'm against stigmata or ratings that say how reliable/good a user is... "bad" users won't get the attention they need to get better... but some sort of label should make it clear for new users/passers-by/foreign visitors/etc. Why do we always have to be so f* politically correct? Some users will never make a decent song - if others have to pay for that it's a pity.

Idea (just to start things of a bit...) When you look at your stats you can see the percentage your songs get. Some average made of at least your last 15 songs could be representative for your general quality - as it is made up by votes from others. The number of comments shouldn't be taken in consideration. It's a quotum you don't get as long as you don't have 15 (or whatever quantity of songs) and is only visible if you intentionally push a specific ("Check this user")button. It shouldn't be visible on your profile or under your name everywhere it can be seen. Only when you want to get an idea of how good a user is rated you'll get to know.

Giving more constructive comments is also a possibility but asks a lot more effort some of us can't afford/ can't be bothered to give anymore. It's also a very long-term way to get the general Q of songs raised.

If somethng goods comes out of this we can make it public after implementation in a newer version of Ebel. As it is pending we might better have this discussion now in order to let Zark create the tools needed to do so.

Anyone... ideas?

The user "Anonymous" shouldn't be able to make votes.  (I'm sure there are people fooling themselves & trying to get more attention by voting anonymously for themselves).  It's absurd really when you see the balans between thumbs up and down for some songs.  Everybody gives thumbs up...  Total crap get 10+ and maybe 2-.

but then again... who likes to give thumbs down...? If I dislike a song it's mostly because it in a wrong genre or very bad but even then I won't easily thumb a song down. I'd quicker give a constructive comment on how I would make the song sound like than thumbing it down. But you have a point there!

  • make ebel a pay-site (not the best option after reconsidering: Lots of free alternatives, so might be possible that even 'good' users will avoid having to pay)
  • limit the amount of uploaded songs (not really the best option either imo, this won't assure quality tracks, newer (badder) users can still upload X (e.g.: 10) tracks, wich might be the number of tracks that most of the users don't even reach... Usually older or better producers have more then 10 (good) tracks that are worth listening to...
  • a rating system: could give directions on what to expect of certain users, but the 'formule' behind it must be well balanced out & thought through... So you can 'sift' more easily through the masses & pick out the 'good' tracks/users... Badder/Crapier tracks would still be present but you won't click them that easily... I do know a couple of examples of guys/tracks that are REALLY good, but they won't be 'rated' very wel because they just don't get the attention they dissurve... (Few hits, to few comments, etc...) Tracks or users in styles that are 'more popular' would also be automatically better rated, wich isn't necessairly 'correct'...
  • a view filter & a more repressive ICZ policy... (Tried that in the beginning, but didn't work... ICZ didn't get any attention...)
  • anonymous voting should perhaps not be considerated in the rating system, but then again, it does show in a way that the track gets the attention it dissurves, just not by 'registred' users.... Why not give 'anonymous' users better reason to get registred & participate seriously on ebel... ( For a 'non' producer/only listener/leecher... what is the benefit of being registred on electrobel? Not much i'd say... Ebel should offer them extra when beeing registred... ( Newsletter(s), 'favorites', rss feeds, downloads of albums/compilations, other features/benefits?)
  • I'm thinking further....

we can give a special price per year for people who comments very well that can start a mouvement of constructive comments.

we can also try to make a comment guide in pdf which explain how to make very good comment.

an ebel mag with some articles about what is in progress can give also an subjective view of this general quality.

each comments should have also a thumb up and down because i think that people which will see comment representativ of what they will thumb up the comment (or thumb down if disagree).

Was also thinking about a 'modified' ebel homepage for first time visitors... For exemple, making them choose between 'I am a producer (& listener)' / 'I am (only) a listener'... And then a custom made 'welkom' page who explains for a) the new producer --> the groundrules (like no copyrighted stuff, a short explanation of e.g. the different zones (ICZ, General, etc..), the group options, the 'homepage' option(s), etc..., all shortly & clearly explained with links perhaps..? then... b) the listener --> explaining the benefits of being registred, telling them that no data will be sold (privacy disclaimer - so they won't be spammed) Just letting him know what's in it for him (listener)... (For the producers that register, maybe even an 'disclaimer' or an 'I accept the 'rules'...?)

what about a ranking system for the tracks instead of the black/white thumbs? for example 5stars= pro quality, 0stars= start over. like that you have a greyzone. the average of stars can then also be used to rank the user

Who is going to judge about that?the idea is good, but i am not sure it is possible in reality + it would take lots of mod time and already now there's a lack of time for most moderators. But I could be wrong..
