yes, ardour and rosegarden are the favorites.

funny you didn't get your emagic to work, mine (emt8) works fine.

toughest job is getting your soundcard to work correctly ... if it's firewire you can give up before starting :)

vst loading is possible, there's a couple of methods, i heard about the wine method too.

honestly, as much as i like linux for everyday life, i'm still not ready to give up my cubase :p even though jack+ardour is pretty funky ^^ (jack allows to do some nasty audio routing, a kind of software mixer, where you can plug any program in any channel, and reroute, mixing virtual and hardware channels etc...)

anyway, you might wanna check Agnula.org and get their live-cd :)

anyway, all depends what kind of music you want to make.

tools like supercollider and rather fun too ^^

I certainly am going to try that agnula live-cd... hope it auto-configures alot of my hardware ;-)

My soundcard is an integrated soundmax... (i know, not the best-of-the-best, but it 'll do just fine for now... and in windows using asio4allv2 i don't have any latency issues)

Granted, the last time i tried to get my mt04 working was on suse9.1 (about 2 years ago). Maybe there are some drivers/modules available for it by now.

should be recognized with a new ALSA release :)

i know when i tryed, i just had to update my alsa to the new build to have it supported :)

latency issues are mainly a windows problem :) ASIO is just a more direct way to address the soundcard than the windows default :)

ASIO might be a thing of the past with Vista (might, it's not confirmed yet)

that soundmax should work straight out of the box with AC97 driver i think :)

who knows... if i can get everything up and running, and find my way around it ok, i might attempt writing something

but don't get your hopes up too high because i too am a bit hooked on my sonar 3/reason 3/mc-505 combo :D

...and also have too much other things on my mind (like my 3 months old son for example ;-))

still, all that open source shiny goodness peeks my eyes out sometimes 8)

if you take Mac Os X for example, the audio engine is CoreAudio ...

and well; you take a stupid AC97 soundcard, you get 12ms latency, and you probably can go below that :)

in windows; without asio .... no comment ^^

There's a couple of interesting things to know about hardware ..

for example, (as bigbenbullet has an emagic amt)... usb-midi is one of the biggest step backs ..; before these units used to be with a serial connection .. well that was wayyyyyy better than now ...

let me explain. ..

the usb bus uses a regular packet scheduling data transfer scheme ... which for audio is perfect because we know the scheduling in advance (44.1khz = 44.1 thousand per second). So the driver can easily put a stable transfer of audio accross usb.

BUT midi isn't a regular thing, therefore midi data can actually get 'quantized' (to use a musical term that everyone understands) into one of those scheduled packets. furthermore the pc clock is so unprecise for midi timings (no really, it's a mess) ...

Anyway, the emagic audio gets compensation for those late packets when using logic (under mac), and the steinberg unit, the midex gets compensation when within cubase.

But nothing better than hooking it in serial connection if possible :p

If your OS is ubuntu or debian you might check out ubuntustudio.com, it's quite easy to setup alsa and jack and stuff and user friendly as well.
