try out mulab, u'll find it at www.mutools.com , this developper has quite some experience: vst(i) implementation, synts & sampler onboard, modular routing engine last but not least, he is belgian!  free version has an 6 track limit, but u'll be amazed with how much music u can make with 6 tracks (remember front 242 & the beatles) -especially if a track is not bound to 1 plug-in / Sound / sample -

the magazine Computer Music claims that you can make music with all the FREEWARE they give you each issue  great magazine imho, learnt a lot of it!  http://www.computermusic.co.uk

http://www.reaper.fm/  not stricktly freeware - uncrippled shareware the user interface isn't all that, but it does an amazing job considering the 3mb installer.  It comes with some internal effects and intruments but you'll be better of using external vst s.

The hardest part to nail for free is the sequencer. If you can stand trackers you'll be able to find something to your liking, or you can use a buzzclone.

On Linux there's some capable free software, like rosegarden an ardour (no midi at the moment, but it's coming in the next release)

Synths, effects and samplers are very easy to find in the freeware section. There's a whole lot of good ones even. I still use a lot of freeware, but some stuff has been replaced with payware because they're easier to work with for me.

I'll be installing a triple boot on my laptop this weekend, hopefully everything will go well. I'm planning the following:

 1. WinXP > Ableton + FLStudio > NO INTERNET :) will be hard :P 2. WinVista > Schoolstuff > VisualStudio, MSOffice blablabla 3. Ubuntu Studio :) > http://ubuntustudio.org/  Unfortunatly the DAW I wanna use is not provided on the installation CD so I'm hoping everything will go well and I'll be able to install LMMS which resembles FLStudio bigtime: http://lmms.sourceforge.net/

 I've googled if my external soundcard (edirol fa-66) is supported in linux and appareantly it is so hopefully I'll get it running. It would be nice if my midi controllers will work too but lets take it step by step ey :) Unfortunatly I'm still quite a noob if it comes to linux but hey you can only try! Anyway imho it's fucking insane what that distro all contains... If you would have to buy all that software... lots of money! Of course it will probably not all be as good as the official retail software :)

Try Renoise 2! It´s a tracker-like sequencer with lots of things allready in it. The shareware version just lacks ASIO support and WAV export... http://www.renoise.com/
