hi everyone, i work with reason 3, i use my asio from my motu828 mk2 soundcard, i got yamaha studiomonitors, and a sony 7506 studio headphone, when i make someting, it sounds ok at home, but when i put it up somewhere else, it sounds different, disformed sounds, bass to loud, swallowed sounds, ect...
in fact my question is, when i play an mp3 from famous artists, it sounds good and the same everywhere, why when i make something with reason it sounds different everywhere, and what should i do to fix that problem, thanks ?
well... that's the art of mixing actually. listen on different audiolevels (too much bass could means that the level of your moni's is too low). when you find the right monitor-level, always stick to it! otherwise all your tracks will be mixed differently without you knowing it. compare on different systems, listen to your track while there is other noise (leave the door of your studio open), you'll quickly hear with elements stay and which fall away in the noise it could be that your moni's are not placed right, so you get dead or boosted freq's (watch out for corners and walls). if the bass is too loud, it can also mean that your moni's give too little bass. maybe there is a switch on the back to compensate for that.
well i have a studio monitor station with the monitors accorded on it, and also club speakers, so i can switch easyly and testing sound on both, and maybe ill buy some other monitors later as i have 3 inputs for speakers, so im mixing it till im good on both speakers, even then it seems to change a lot when i put it up at friends places,
also when i export a track from reason, its not loud enough somewhere else, if i go louder in reason im clipping and when i put it louder with soundforge its seems te be clipping 2, so im not sure about my procedure of working :)
I just received 4 mastered tracks yesterday from a studio and had a lot of discussions about everything, and really, no matter what you do, you will not get the quality a professional studio will be able to offer you.
When I put the original next to the mastered track, if even I can note differences, a musician probably has a field day finding what has been made better in it.
It's an art to actually make your music sound the way it will sound good both on your laptop, a friend's speakers, and a venue soundsystem.
It's called good mixing and mastering. The trick that works best for me is to get to know your monitors REALLY REALLY good. By that I mean you have to mix to make it sound right in most places. Car stereo's are a good test, playing live at parties too. Room accoustics are important too. Maybe your monitors give a flat response but your room creates 'standing' waves, resonating some frequencies which make you cut those frequencies which shouldn't be cut. That's why sometimes you have to mix your mix against what you perceive as best sounding in your specific environment. For me, for example, that is making my music too bassy because I know that my monitors in my 'studio' give too much bass or give that impression at least. 250-400hz are too quiet. If i play my songs on other speakers, those frequencies are too loud. Anticipate on that experience.
As for loudness: what Jemenfish said... helas... you will never obtain the quality and loudness of a pro studio. But when your mixes are ok, then you have nothing to worry about.
yeah mixing alright, but at home it sounds ok on the monitors, and i dont want to burn a cd each time i change something in my track to test it in my car, i think i will get a huge cd collection then,
thats why u have monitor stations with inputs for 3 speakers or more, but it seems when i mix with the headphones i get a better result as with the monitors when i put it on somewhere else... some sounds are also traitor i think in ur database, specialy basslines

thats not the reason why you have 3 inputs, but indeed you can use em, it seems you have all it needs to make a good mixdown, so maybe think twice before you listen and analyse the sound. I mean you take your fav production, you know how it sounds good at home on you monitors, you check the differences in two or three other sound systems and youll know what to do and how to set up your mixes. There is no need to burn cds each time. Good luck

what aphone sais...
just try to come as close to the sound of your fav's on your system
but to be honest: you work with reason.... reason sucks² when it comes to sound (good stuff inside though). Damn the problems I had making a decent mix with that prog. Thats why I changed tot ableton
reason doesnt suck at all about the sound, you just need to know what to do with your sound :p all my prductions are reason only use the mastering tools and patches inreason, you ll feel his power :) back to the thread
