what is DnB ? ;-)

Hehe, wasn't ment to attack you, happy you don't think that way cause you got some nice producer skills ... well what can I say what is drum&bass, hmz I should say listen to songs from Nojzz, Emblem etc. that is drum&bass for me :) or visit www.breakz.be and check some songs there ... can't really give ya a good definition ... it all began in 1992 with the rave and the hardcore and after lot of evolving you have now a genre drum&bass - going between 160 & 180 bpm if i'm not mistaken, drumloops & basslines or bass stabs are the main thing but every song has his own flow ... hmz yeah i'm not good in putting a definition here ... gonna let that to someone that explain it more :)

btw: from where did you get your definition ? somewhere it's right :) but still in my opinion those 2 tracks are not really drum&bass for me ... sorry a sub categorie ... yeah could be, but that's again one more genre that is created than ... lately imo there are too much subgenres

think this can become a heavy discussion :) but me ain't that good with words, so I hope someone with more drum&bass experience will try to explain what he thinks bout it

i got the definition from Audiogalaxy it's hard to describe a genre .. but remember that dnb isn't ONLY the type with that big violent bassline :) dnb has subgenres :

• atmospheric dnb
• jazzy dnb
• hardcore dnb <-- the one u mean

i don't want e-bel to go too much into subgenres. already the whole "Trance, Hard Trance" genres are too much i think.. will think about merging them in one "Trance" ...

I agree, 28 genres (and counting) is really a lot. Maybe it would be easier if we would catalog them based on something more objective like e.g. BPM.

Example: < 120 120-139 140-159 160-180

Or create +/- 7 main genres and if they get populated, add subgenres inside that genre.

I agree with Ro5 why not create +/- 7 main genres and then add subgenres inside that genre.

for example Electronic --> Trance/Hardtrance --> House/Hardhouse --> Jumper/Rave

and so on

thats more like it ... But having a 'lounge' AND 'downbeat' style is a bit redundant ... ok lounge is more jazzy, but it's included in the downbeat genre ..

and what do you mean by ambient dnb and atmospheric dnb, thats the same thing .... and why still a separation between trance and hardtrance ? you'd say Trance and GoaTrance, maybe i'd think about it, but how is HArd Trance so different it needs its own style ?

i just put down what popt into my mindt. IThe idea was a differention between chill, 4/4, non-steady en experimental; the subdivision is up to you ;)

Well, I wanted to react on eddie's question about dnb.

I think the name itself, drum & bass, still says what's it's all about, drums and bass. If u take any record, from LTJ Bukem 'Horizons' to the harder productions like those from Dom & Roland, the central issue is always to make fast groovy breaks (always breakz, man!! it's fast breakbeat) supported by a heavy bassline, as elements that complement each other. The two central elements of a good dnb track; most important!!!!!

I always argued with a friend of mine if some tunes from Squarepusher or Aphex can be called dnb. In my opinion it's never pure dnb, firstly because of what I mentioned before; and second cos guys like aphex aren't simply a part of the straight dnb scene. So I think it's all about subcultures, labels & scenes who promote a certain kind of music, and genres are a reflection of those scenes.

To conclude I could say to u, eddie to check www.breakbeat.co.uk; there u can listen to genuine UK-dnb releases. If u listen to a lot of tracks, u'll realise that dnb nowadays has gone more binary and rigid than the early -more jungle oriented- days, but also that it has become a dj-related music with a real structure (intro, first drop, break, second drop, amen breaks...in each track u'll hear those elements).

BTW About the subdivisions-question: don't make it more difficult than it is nowadays. Bukem is dnb, and Dillinja is dnb, no need to make a division between fluffy dnb and hard dnb, its like making a distinction between hard trance and trance, which is also unnecessary (like ZARk said)....

Indeed, I also kinda hate those new categories people create, like dark drum&bass, funky drum&bass, techy drum&bass, ... I mean drum&bass is drum&bass :)

I made a smart analogie to someone the other day ... Electrobel is a bit like a record store, head towards the wall of the shop that looks interesting, browse thru the records and when something looks interesting listen ... and hell, if you have time, just take a big pile and listen to them all, i always do that :) (bigup for ur patience working-class-hero ;) )
