Help neededThere is no ideal way to shape a song, everyone has his own technique...I was wondering how do YOU start with a song?
I usually play around with my synths till I find a nice sound or melody. Then I start working very chronologically, unlike many people I start with the intro and improvise my way to the end. It's defenitely not a great way to work coz it takes ages (you relisten a million times and sometimes you simply get stuck and abandon the whole thing), but I like it coz the song evolves in the way I evolve when making it, so a song that starts off very sad can end up very cheerfully.
Just recently I decided to try a different method (I think many people work this way); I take the initial idea and try to build many different rough sounds and variations around it. Then I combine these samples/midi-patterns and shape them into the proper structure. After that I fill the holes and work on the consistency of the song and finally I reproduce the whole thing with clean sounds and do the mastering. This technique will take me a lot longer on complex songs than the previous, but it will avoid unfinished or abandoned projects.
Curious to know how you people do it ;)

i usually browse thru my presets and try to find inspiration playing around the notes ^^
or sometimes i just start making a sound until it inspires me...
Then i'd make a loop, add a beat, some elements, until i have the main loop for the song ... then i work on the intro, the structure etc...
I start off with a general idea.. Which van be a Beat/Melody/Sentence..
Also having a feeling for the song, what it should be, then it's just jamming my way round.. Well, you relisten your initial idea and rethink ways to get a more specefic feeling of what you try to create..
Structure changes a lot when making the songs, don't know why..

may be cause ya always swappin sounds,
i always make a solid base,with al instr in place,then do structure!!!
ex,if ya work with vocals,ya can start off ,with long intro's,or extra long breaks :D

my guitar helps throughout the song first I make the structure on it then I search for the right sounds on keyboards or plug-ins to give it the feel I want it to have. Mosly every keyboardriff was first a guitarriddle. in the beginnin I use a excisting drumsample (futuremusic/internet), when the basics of the song have been recorded I search for the definite groove on a real drumset and try to program it or sometimes record hihats or symbals. my problem (one of them) now is that I only have two audio-ins so I'm not able to record a whole drumpart. But there will come a time ...
- listening to a lot of old songs
- sampling interesting parts
- cut them into recycle
- play with them ito Reason
- build the melody
- making the beat
- compressing in cool edit pro or soundforge
- listening to my creation, deciding it's a piece of shit and trying again until success.
i have different ways to build my songs.sometimes i start with a feeling in my head.i then try to put that idea in a ruff loop(little bit like drawing the first ruff structure before getting into detail)the longer you work with your preffered sequencer the faster and more efficiant you start to work(very imported, because in the beginning of making music you lose yourself in searching the right thing and often come out with something totally different you had in mind; wich sometimes can be good offcourse :)) )after the building of that loop i start copying it over and over again.i then start to delete some parts in order to build the main structure of the whole song(like leogo blocks:D) .the rest is finishing touch. sometime i just start jammin and before you know the song is almost finnished.sometime i'm just playing around with a synth until a good noise or pad comes along(gives you inspiration)some songs really build theirselfs ;don't you have that feeling sometime?i don't preffere any of these techniques i just use one of them on the right time or place.so in my opinion get your techniques down and the rest will follow :D

Just remember that the earliest hit-records you know where taped with just one microphone, and dynamics depended on the relative position of the musican towards the mic. (eg. Sun-studio recordings) And in the 60's this evolved to recording with 2 mics... waaw, stereo...
so why not... DFA use the trick all the time to just record a drum with 2 good microphones, and it's not like it hasn't brought them any succes...
