Hello,
I'm reading this sub-forum & see that u bastards all play every weekend (probably before 5000 extatic people!) Since most of us R no member of SABAM, what R u charging for a gig ? 1h - 2 h - 3 h ?? Have u any special wishes beforehand on a list (cfr "RIDER") like champagne in the dressingroom, complete buffet, only PELLEGRINO water, 2 blondes with miniskirt in the hotelroom, limo 2 pick u up, ... do any of U make use of the "kleine kunstenaarsvergoeding" of 121€ à day -> 2200€ / annum so u don't pay any taxes? Or R u board director of your own company ? (IkMaaKNoiZ ltd)
pls advice
thx,
jay
hey jay, We all play every weekend? :))
What I know and assume;
First of all Im talking about rather small underground breackore/IDM/electronica/drill'n bass/drum'n bass/dubstep/chiptune-partys. As a producer we mostely play 45 minutes to 01h15 (played 02h20 for FREE this weekend for a special occasion, wich was pretty exceptional). Alot of guys including me play just for drinks if its a party organised by friends or even just people you know...or for a benefit offcourse.Otherwise most of us ask/get 50 eur.,and you have to ask for it most of the time,or else you wouldnt get payd, that happens regularly. (if you play in a foreign country,it'l get from 100eur. to 400 and more ive been told) If you need refund for your travel, some of us might ask a little more....And all we wish/ask for is free drinks. You often even never see the organiser, just an email the week after or something... Im personally gonna ask more and more if I need to travel outside my town,Im looking for a ballance between asking more and getting rejected for asking too much because Idd like to play less ,and focus on music-making rather than playing it (Idd like to keep it as abstract as mpossible, but at the other hand its nice to get out with your tunes, you know)... So ,money is very often a secondary issiue/element in this "circle" of people, for most of us I believe. We most of all like to party and play if possible. I am a part-time independent, and I have been thinkin of doin it "legal" each time I get some cash but I didnt manage to do i so far.Perhaps I should (all I need is the signature of the organisor, and hopefully they wont forget to transfer 50 or more eur. to my indep. bankaccount.)
They really arent verry specific on that "kleine kunstenaars vergoeding". (the 121eur a day is the maximum) I really wouldnt know how it goes in other party's /gigs with other genres like ambient/downbeat/experimental...but am verry interested though.
(info:even if you organise a party with all live-acts you still have to let sabam know about it, or theyll get at your door asking for a signature) Looking forward to other replys
pfff depends very very much of where you're playing. I play from €0 (parties I like/friends parties etc) up till €150 (bigger parties that make money) in Belgium. I always get free entrance (ofcourse), free booze, transport costs, 3 bitches and 5gr C :)). No I'm kidding, I pay for my booze ;) When you play abroad apparently you get (much) more since you're all foreigny and exotic. Abroad it goes up to €500, free food & drinks & free entrance for you and a friend.
But then again, I hardly play live these days...
edit: oh, and about Sabam: fuck them. They won't ever see a cent from me. And about taxes: we're small fish but let's not go there ;)
same here like skip's scenario... except I don't have any bookings for abroad :D
playing 1 hour , charging 25 euros :D just some beers if its a free party . dont play every weekend though ones a moth is enough :D would like some blondes in miniskirts :d
You can go LOWER than kleine vergoeding, just not higher. Unless you need to be there for 2 days (which is possible if it's a party), then you can actually ask for 2 days, so a bit more than 200 euro.
I disagree on the part of asking more when playing abroad. Our clubs have subsidies and they can do it to offer 50 or 100 euro, even jeugdhuizen, when they don't get a return out of it. That's not the case throughout europe, if the club doesn't do break even or gain money in some countries and do this a couple of times, well, there's no more club eh?
TBH, and this is entirely from my promoter point of view, there's a lot of foreign acts (Rephlex, Planet Mu, Hotflush, Tempa, enz. enz.) I booked for anything ranging from free to 300 euro in the last year. Of course you have travel costs added but even then, for the audience turnout, it's usually worth it. For Belgian people, I think you just have to ask yourself, do I want to play live for people I don't know, or do I want to get some hard dime out of it. If it's the former, you can try to wiggle your way into larger events (like skip did with therapy sessions) you can later use as a reference and you automatically go into category 2.
If you're already set in category 2 from the start, well you better have some darn good things going for you. Records, airplay, a crowd of 276 people following you around drinking the venue's stock of beer, whatever. For instance I know a Brussels bloke doing a minimalistic live act, I liked it so I went up to ask for the fee, was 400 euro. I just walked away shaking my head.
There's usually no justification to ask more than kleine vergoedingsregel. You get taxed anyway and most venues won't offer you a couple of hundred for your set unless you really got big, in which case, you'll probably already have one of the Belgian douchebag managers behind you.
I was talking (big ass) festivals. that's my only experience abroad so far. And I don't know who pays what in which scene but I do know that in the psytrancescene, most liveacts get €300-€3000/act... 3000 even being names you never heard of. When we're talink infected m. or hallucinogen it's more like >5000 I guess. But even for parties I know some smallscale belgian producers who get >500/gig. I guess the psytrancescene is loaded :))

damn I should've made psytrance lol :)
no man, you should make an electrorockgroup with a badass name, get yourself a trashy but beautiful ex-goth neo-punk female singer, produce some catchy emotional dancesong with the worst French line ever, buy 10 stubru 'Switch' cd's & give dj-sets for 1000/each. ;)
THAT'S what you should do.
chop-chop!
all i ask is a hotelroom i can smash to bits... prolly the reason why nobody asks me :p
