midi introduction and volume troubles

mic output? that's your problem. you need to use line outputs. mic signals are very low level and should be recorded through mic pre-amps on a mixer or audio interface to boost the volume.

yeah i am aware of that, but recently I am using the line out of the groovebox (jack with adaptorcable to cinch) connected to the line in (cinch) of the soundcard, and still same problem, although maybe little improvement.

long shot but maybe the terratec's line inputs are set to +4dB level and the MC's output is -10dB. +4dB and -10dB level are the 2 standards for line levels. +4dB for pro gear, -10dB for consumer gear. have a look in the settings and documentation of your terratec. but maybe it doesn't have the option and it is fixed at -10dB.

also, is this difference in volume like a couple of dB's or really dramatic? if it is not that much maybe that's because tracks posted on ebel have maximized levels by post-processing/mastering with compression and limiting.

that could be true, the output power of my 505 isn't that much overall

no it's not so dramatic, but you get the obvious 'speakernoise' in the background when you need to play a track really loud on a soundsystem

google for 'midi faq' or 'midi tutorial'. wikipedia probably has good info too.

my experience with an MC303 is that the midi implementation sucks so it's not easily integrated with an external midi sequencer (like cubase). don't know the MC505 but you should check it's documentation to find out how it works precisely.

btw, cubase is not the easiest program to learn things with... i'd advise you to check out ableton live

well, i hope u know that midi out goes to midi in and vice versa... i've seen beginners connecting midi in to midi in... in cubase tracks or other sequencers, u can select the dmx6 midi driver

about the dmx: -check your parameters on the dmx mixer... is this configured ok? because i never had a problem with a too low input... (have you seen u can boost your input with the round knobs just underneath the 'blinking clipping lights'?)

-u can also set your asio on the mixer panel, but making it a better response might create conflicts in other software, meaning: if u change the dma buffer size from 15ms to 10 or 7ms and/or the asio buffer size from 1024 to 128 samples, u will have a faster response when pushing a key on a keyboard connected to your dmx-midi, but playing a game on the same dma might get you in trouble. (u can save mixer-configurations, so save your default b4 u go playing around with these parameters...)

-when working with audio tracks in cubase, go to 'devices/device setup/vst multitrack', there u are able to switch between 3 dmx drivers... select the full duplex driver when you want to play and record at the same time, when not recording and only playing it's better to switch to the asio 6dmx driver, the last multimedia driver i never use...

I've got a mc505 too. It sucks... (for midi). You can't midi sysex or use it as a sequencer for pc applications. It flips constantly. The only way you can use it on a stable and propre way is as a midi controller (as in: knobs assigned to parameters, like in ableton). Apart from that: don't use it, simple...

The recording problem is strange! You should be able to get enough volume out of the 505. Maybe you mixed very silently? or you put the compressor efx on? Try to use the 3-4 and 5-6 outs (without efx) and see what that gives.

yeah, i was afraid 2 say this, cause i remember me being frustrated when trying 2 connect a mc303 to an atari long ago... so the 505 isn't any better on that i guess... they're nice to use standalone or with another Roland-product...
