Hi
i've started looking a bit more into sampling. (usually i'm more a "synthetise it all" kinda guy ^^)
anyway, i'm thinking of aquiring an Emu Emulator X (which is basically a 1212m + sampling software)
But a couple of questions arise ...
The onboard dsp looks pretty cool, but i'm guessing that if i want to render down the effect i'll have to do some kind of audio loopback to get the feed ? Or is there some kind of software internal routing ?
The sampling software ... does it use the card's hardware ? or is it just a 'stupid' software that would run on any machine ? If i buy that package it's to have a 0% cpu sampler, not to have my cpu hogged ... otherwise i just go and buy a sampler vst, as i'm sure there's lot's of good stuff out there. Probably NI have some good stuff.
On the other hand i heard great stuff about the 1212m (especially the ad/da which have 120db dynamic :P ) but it does take out 2pci slots !! and my new motherboard (asus p5ld2) only has 3 pci slots, 1 of which is so close to my vga card's fan i'd rather not put anything there .... and i have a pci tuner card (watch vt4 while making music is cool ^^) and a scsi pci card too (for my old emu esi32 sampler and zip drive)
Any advice is welcome :P
Emu 1212m is 199€ and Emulator X (1212m + sampler software + 2gb soundbanks) 299€
edit: sorry, went back on emu website ... the 1212m only takes 1pci slot, but has a second card linked with a flat cable .. so that should pose no problem ^^
i bought the ProteusX, the little brother of the EmuX. It's one of my best audio-card, great asio and for the price ( 149€) you wonder how they do it. It's great stuff, the ProteusX also loads all kinds of samples (the stupid thing is that you need to convert the samples in EmuX-files). The software is only working with the card. It's pretty new in the case and i don't have enough experience.
You should compare the possibilities of the 2 cards and the sofware before paying 250€ more...
good luck
well i just saw that the 1212m comes with a LE version of the emulator x software, and 1000 samples.
1212m comes with ad/da which are used in the Protools :) (the real ones ... not the digi stuff)
so this looks like top quality for a real good price.
i'm currently using a M-Audio Quattro usb, and now that i have a racked pc, thinking it's best to get a pci card ^^
Hi Zark,
apparently you're willing to spend 500€ on soft-sampler.
Why don't you buy as 2nd hand Akai or Emu sampler? For that price you can get some top of the line models. Emu E5000, Akai S5000, Akai Z4 etc...
The Emu's have the best synth engine (with those cords & filters etc). The synth engine is even more advanced than a regular synth... The Akai's are the industry standard and have better computer support thanks to USB & Ak.Sys...
And best of all: Hardware samplers work even without the computer running!
i already have an emu Esi32 which i'm selling
and i'm not willing to spend 500€ on a soft sampler ^^
i'm talking about 299€ for a soundcard which has the same ad/da as the protools, with onboard dps effect, and that comes with 2gb soundbank and a softsampler.
not the same ;)

If it makes you happy... :D
