The amen break philosophy
Help neededhi dear e-bellians!
in our brave quest of making music we all stumble upon the amen once the right tool for the allmighty sound we all know
but i ask myself, how do you treat the amen? soundwise then, how to get the nice fancy amen breaks you hear in the stuff we listen at, out of that one classic loop? when i start twiddling too much with the samples it mostly doesn't sound too well anymore , same for an overload of fx
so any advice is mostly regarded :))

cut it, edit it, stretch it, pitch it, filter it, put some reversed snares in it for making it fancy...soundwise...LAYER IT!! and don't forget to compress and eq...
so with layering you mean putting pieces of the amen in layers and then doing yer thing?

me I mostely EQ it a lot and layer it (putting different hits on top of it: a different snare+hh+basskick+krash or just layer another amen on top (but EQing them both so they fit eachother)

wicked! thanks peeps, that one tip about layering was pretty important i think i already did something i was asking myself for ages how to reach it :) wel i'm back to work now^^
every producer use this fukn amen break... why dont u try to make another one? be creative !! inchallah break, yavé beak, point break, you got infinite choice :p
i like to layer amen snares with hiphop snares (dr dre samplepack i think, not shure)...
at any point in my songs: i tend to use one amen as it is (only eq'ing) then i slice a second one,put a lot of distortion on it, (but you gotta be into that kinda stuff (strog, stuntrock...)) and indeed afterwards layering in some other kicks and snares and percussion stuff with a drum computer, prutsing endlessly to fit them in sound an rythmic-wise. that way you got a lot of different ways to create variation without recreating that amen every time.
oh allmost forgot, besides my fundation amen, and fx'ed amens i often use one more and pitch it very high, to get a freaky drumline in between. (for example, check the last minute of "break the silence", it's pure pitched amen)
and after all that i layer in some 4/4 hc-kicks at low volume to give it a little punch (but i have yet to perfect my skillz on this one, keeps sounding rather cheap, mostly due to bad eq'ing)
there is just so much you can do with that freaking funky drumline, it's just perfect in every way^^

yeah, problem is, when making a loop yourself out of different hits, it often lacks crunch/fluency.... overcompressing helps, but not always enough. So it's often advisable to layer an existing break underneath for more crunch (you don't let the entire sound sound through, just usiing it to fill it up....). So then your back at using an amen^^
btw: I think ppl who use the amen for layering or layer on top of an amen (just hits) and EQ a bit & such are being quite creative!!
