How to make IDM?

me too i really want to know how to make IDM... i've heard somewhere that even venetian snares is doing IDM but i don't really believe that... i'm so drunk on champagne now 'cause i'm 21 today :D

for me idm is based on a super search of sonority and super modication of sample. Try Reaktor, most synth and groove box is for idm like newskool for example a sequenceur which work with the game of the life an alrgorythme very special and well-know

the origin of IDM come from "Musique concrète" (French; literally, "concrete music"), is the name given to a class of electronic music produced from editing together fragments of natural and industrial sounds. It is the opposite of traditional composing (known to some as Musique Abstraite, literally, Abstract Music) as the sounds are recorded first then built into a tune as opposed to a tune being written then given to players to turn into sound .........*Recently, the growing popularity in all forms of electronica has led to a re-birth of Musique concrète. Artists such as Christian Fennesz, Francisco Lopez, and Scanner use many Concrète techniques in their music while often being classified under more common electronica genres such as IDM or downtempo. *

ofcourse, idm is a genre with many definitions, thus making "the classic idm track" might prove to be difficult. Take for instance aphex twin, autechre and mr projectile. Three times idm, but three different things all together. Still, I do think you can distill some basic idm-rules:

1.drum programming: this is what makes idm idm. it needs to be fast (140-160 bpm) and complicated, with unusual sounds. Two ways to go about it: - create your drum sounds with a synthesizer (and modify them in the course of the track) or - load up your drum computer with samples of things that go boing (broken glass, rattling buckets, a stapler,...) and modify them in the course of the track ! important ! lots of variation is mandatory. try to avoid looping.

2.melody: this is what distinguishes one idm-er from the next. listen to everything ever released on merck and you'll know what to do. brothomstates is a good example too. basic rule is: make it emotional, genre sad but beautiful

3. structure: like every other song you've ever heard.

Also typical is the rattling sound which is created through putting several litlle bits of a sample after each other in a signature which is 1/16 to 1/64. DZZZZRRRRRR!!!!

here's a little tip: to make almost any drumkit (samples) sound like something idm-ish, slide down the 'sustain' of the samples to about 10%, this makes the samples much shorter and gives a sequence of clicks and pops, wich is often used. Then resample the clicks and add them to your regular drumkit. I will try to upload one of my homemade IDM kits and post the link here, so u can experiment with it. cheers.
