Software needed

To play music and video files look no further than VLC media player, open source, free and play literally everything you throw at it. (btw: fuck itunes, and use vlc to play mp3's and stuff. itunes is the biggest resource hog mediaplayer I know) http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

As for Nero: if it came with your pc, you'll have to use the recovery cd that came with it (but that typically requires you to install everything including windows from scratch, so it might not be an option)

On linux there's k3b which works very well, but I don't think it has a windows port.

I also use this one a lot (works ok for cd's, didn't try it for dvd's yet): http://cdburnerxp.se/ (not open source, but still free :) )

And if you're in the market for a free and extremely light weight wave-editor with batch processing and vst support: take a look at www.wavosaur.com

If you need any more tools, just let me know. I've got a gigantic list of quality free and/or open source tools

apparantly I got a bigger problem.... some dvd's did work on certain programs but: there was music & effects but I couldn't hear the vocals appears its still the same with VCL player (ow shit) anyone has any idea how come?? becouse I got some killer quotes to cut out of my (LEGIT!!) dvd-collection but (logically) I can't :s

ow and is there even an option to make it so only the vocals play & no FX/music (would come in handy in the quote cutting....)

my audio was standing in 5.1 so solved^^ -> still need a dvdrighter program

I looked around on their site, and I think cdburnerxp also writes dvd's.

If you want to rip audio out of video files try this tool: http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net

Converts any format into any other format, and it allows you to rip out audio tracks out of video files. If the dvd has a seperate dialog track, this tool will allow you to extract it. (and otherwise, it'll extract the audio file for you) It's easier than the old 'record stereo out' windows trick.
