A friend of mine is programming some sort of Medieval online-RPG-game him self, and has asked me if I could help him with the music. (Or if I knew somebody who’d be interested.) I’d like to help him, but it’s all kinda new to me, so I could do with some advise!!
The guy wants music for different events during the game. You know; calm music for when you’re in a town, some scary music, some battle-music etc. Enplus, the different parts would have to blend into each other too.
I think I aught to make some kind of short loop-able piece first, and then check if I can fit something else to it? Right? But it can hardly be as easy as that?! What’s the best program to see if the different standalone loops follow smoothly? What should I take in consideration before of while making loops?
You tell me…
Here's a hint: work with layers.
here's an example: Give each region a basic theme (melody). Then use that melody in a bombastic way for the big town, use it with folk instruments for the local vilage. For scary shit, you just use some pads and have the melody echo from time to time. For battles start from the peace song you have for that region and layer some heavy percussion on it.
Often sound effects are enough, you don't need to have music going all the time. It gets on your nerves. So make tracks which go like atmosfere->music->atmosphere etc. Or have your friend code in a timer which triggers the music from time to time.
As for which programs to use: the one you feel best with, there's no good or bad here. Unless you have to score something to cut scenes, it that case you want it to have a video player like ableton or FL.
I hope this is usefull to you :)
Hmm the basic-theme sounds like a good idea to me.
dunno about Ableton... Normally I make my music with Hardware only (yamaha RS7000) and then record the lot in Cubase on my laptop... I have no experiance with ableton or other music-software... I'll try to think of a theme first and try to make some variations and see what comes out...
Thanx for the tips! (more are always welcome)
whoo, i like that sh**, but that parts have to blend, makes me uncomfortable... i've always liked to do something like the 'age of empiresII'-soundtrack
i've done a 'weather'-soundtrack once for a pocketpc-game, used soundtracker for that, which enables you to create loops from various other loops, but the strong point being that you can generate variation in your looping. you often hear this with wind and sea in games...
