i think that it's totally inefficient if you don't have a good label behind you that helps for promo. The other problem is that numeric distribution is not yet recognized by the specialized press. And without them, it is very hard to reach new listeners.

Beatport is the digital online marketplace that generates the most sales amongst portals out there, since it attracts A LOT of traffic, and has a huge database of labels, artists and tracks. For this reason, its the best place to have your music for sale online. If anyone were to actually buy your stuff, that would be the place!

Whether someone would be doing well or not, depends entirely on the label he has behind him, and on the amount of promotion he is getting... Oh yes, i almost forgot - and also on how good his music is :). I am signed to one of the larger labels on Beatport and for this reason its easy for me to get a decent amount of promotion, plus lots of opportunities to get my tracks remixed (the track must be requested for remix by the label though in order to be featured in a remixed release). So working with some very cool artists has really helped me improve tremendously lately.

You cannot become rich by production alone, even if you are 'doing well', if i have understood the general question correctly! Even big names in the industry support that statement. This is a fact of the modern world, with the existence of torrents and all that. If you want to become rich from electronic dance music, you must become an established dj, and promote your productions during your live sets, and this is where you'll get the money: Live performances!! This is what pays nowadays, cause it cannot be downloaded illegally :)

So all in all:

  1. Am i doing well?: Yes, i certainly do think so in my humble opinion.
  2. Am i stinking rich?: Nope :)
