What video software do you use/recommend?

I'm interrested in having some fun with videos soon... but as I'm an absolute noobie I know shit about it...
I've only done tons of photography til now...
The cam I'm willing to use (my sisters) Is a 3 years JVC digicam... (I dont know the details coz I haven't seen the cam in long time) ... that cost 1700 Euros at that time... I guess it should be fine...
so... any advice is welcome!
What software is good, intuitive and easy to use for editing? (I think some of you are using Sonic Foundry or Sony VEGAS?)
What shall I take care of?
Any other tips, tricks or suggestions?

most usefull program you'll ever need : virtualdub :)
and yeah, vegas is quite fast and usefull :)
unfortunately there aren't many 'good' video programs out there apart from the ones everyone know :) there a couple of new things developing under linux, but nothing extraordinary (except for special tasks like postprod, matte painting etc...)
Adobe Premiere Pro in combination with Adobe After Effects for post production. If its a mini DV cam you can very easily capture the footage with firewire 2 pc. Of coz beeing a good citizin you should buy this stuff ;) and that is a loooooooot of money.
There are several open source alternatives but till present i didnt encounter software that is as good as the package above. have a look at http://sourceforge.net/
Ableton 6 supports video. Didnt test it yet but looks very promising. Especially for the synchronisation of sound/video.
if u are a starter why not use the simple i-movie for mac...
it has a lot of features and is good enough to get started with video, really it is...
for the rest, vegas or pinnacle are 2 good programs...
