USB SoundCard

I'm using a tascam us-428 (usb1.1) soundcard and I'm pretty happy with it. But... I had to install a second USB card (pcmcia) in my laptop to avoid clicks and stutters during playback. problem with the integrated USB port I think (via chipset, AMD proc...). No problems on my desktop (Compaq, Intel chipset) If I would have to buy another card I would go for firewire.

well i checked out the more i could,

and two cards get my attention, the m-audio quattro (for the price) and then the m-audio FireWire 410, which is a great piece of hardware and price/value ratio ... but price is quite high ... oh yeah, and the emagic emi 2/6 , which is really ugly; but has some good reviews and ain't too expensive

the tascam 428 is pretty sweet, but i'd rather go for a separate soundcard + control surface (such as the mikrokontrol or the UC33e)

I second that.. The only thing I thrust tru usb is my midi patchbay Firewire will be more versatile.

well i finally went for a M-audio Quattro . pretty good price for 4in/out

the firewire module is upthere at 500E .. though it has 4in and 10out :D

if someone is interested i know someone selling an edirol DA2496 almost like new for something like 2/3 of the price :) (love that machine ... 8in/out in 19" format ... mmmh :) ) his nickname is xavdlp, you can PM him for more details ...

Does it work ? I 've read a lot of forums of people owning a quattro, and quite 90% of them are complaining about driver unstability, sound stuttering and so on...

i'll tell you when i get it :)

you'll need usb ASIO drivers. i had a usb midi-controller for a while and without those drivers i had about 1 sec of delay on every thing

I have an M-Audio Quattro and it works perfectly. Very good price quality. By the way, i buy all my gear at www.musicstorekoeln.de or www.musikproductiv.de So far i have found to be the best quality priced stores. Cheaper than to buy it with the Belgian dealers.

well i bought the quattro too ...

quite happy with it, though i get some trouble with XP, like after a while it seems like driver crashes (if not used for like an hour or two), then i have to disconnect and reconnect and its back up again ...

that force xp to not disconnect the usb connection and other stuffs it runs fine if you have a simple integrated soundcard on motherboard , pci or usb and reduce an important rate of latency...(ex:i have a laptop with no serious sound card (ac97 on MB)and the latency in asio turns to 10ms with sx and fix the problem of usb deconnecting with uc33) try it... good stuff ...but read the installation proceed to prevent serious crashes ;)
