A friend of mine asked me for advice regarding a soft synth for ambient music production. As I am mostly a Reason User, my experiences with virtual synths are limited.

Do you have some good advice for my friend? If possible add links to sound examples.

Thank you

Btw... he is a pure mac user.

Crystal all the way. Modulation madness and can even load sf2's as oscillators. If you can't make a soundscape or pad with that synth, you've picked the wrong hobby :) (for you lazy people, you can have it breed a new patch out of twe existing ones) Was developed for mac first. Another freebie for mac is Zoid and tripple cheese(by u-he) . They're both kind of weird in design, so should work fine for ambient stuff

The prologue from steinberg. is a very versatile soundscape synth It comes with Cubase but i think you buy it from the steinberg website. The patches are not so good you need to work that synth, but once you understand the procédé you can make amazing scapes 'n drones! with it!

Why the hell is nobody talking about Native Instrument Absynth ? It's for me the most complete instrument to make ambient music for an affordable price.
