Digital video cmaera info request
Off-topicIf it's in the wrong forum please bump it, I wasn't exactly certain for this one...
Some of you may have noticed I regularly take pictures on events, but I'm getting tired of it, and since I'm planning on releasing a DVD in 2007, I would want to switch to a digital video camera.
Now, I'm a complete n00b in that kind of material. Does anyone have any suggestions? Something I should look out for in particular? Batteries and all that isn't an issue, I'll just buy an extra battery. But I'd need to know some details that I'm certain I get a good camera for concert filming and not some silly camera geared for children's birthday parties :)
OH, budget preferably about 400-500 euro. I could do more, but then I'd just sell my photo camera to make up for the difference, and buy a video cam that can also take high res. pictures.

one thing i know is that 3 CCD camera's are much better than 1 CCD. the CCD is the light 'sensor'. 3 CCD cam's have one for each primary color: R, G & B. 1 CCD cam's just have one for the whole color spectrum. (semi)pro cam's always have 3 CCD's.
you'll probably be happy with serious mic and audio connections on your cam too. consumer cams usually don't have many connection options and are limited to built-in or brand specific mic's.

they record directly on memory disks :)
afterwards at home, it's just a drag and drop operation :)

Yeah, I noticed that, but I fervently dislike standing nonstop in a 'press' area, so if I need to record in the audience (which usually gives me better shots taking pictures, maybe I'm just biased), if you're jostled left and right or there's people shouting next to you, I'm not certain I'd want to walk around with external mics.
Aren't they fragile? Or are there any specifically made for this purpose?

Aren't they fragile? Or are there any specifically made for this purpose? there are very directional mic's which will only pick up what's really in front of ya (like interview mic's). but don't expect to get quality music recordings from a gig that way.
if you have a line-in and fixed cam position you can feed it a signal from the PA/dj mixer.
this month's issue of 'test aankoop' (flemish magazine) is about camcorders, might be interesting to read it..

I bought a JVC Everio series cam. Don't have the specific name here with me, it ends in 67. It has a built-in 20 gig capacity harddisk, which is needed if you want to take high quality 16:9 recordings (even then it takes only 4.5 hours). The battery supplied only lasts for a small hour so I bought a large extra battery able to go 3+ hours.
All in all it set me back about 800 euro with accessories. As you can see with the Hosm0z clip, it's rather good quality considering I had to downsize it to fit on youtube in a Divx file. I filmed at recyclart but put it on a 'stabilizer' (?) and didn't hand-shoot so it's less wobbly.
All in all I'm pretty satisfied with it, I just need to learn how to use it better.
