TO PRODUCE A VINYL RECORD What you need: a master CD (can be a DAT, but avoid mini disc) of what you’d like to press up, and it should contain music that NEEDS to be pressed up, not just something to satisfy your ego when you see it, not more of the same that is already out there. Ask yourself if these tracks are really useful to have on vinyl for other people too. It’s not a bad idea to play it out at parties, either from CD (easy and cheap) or from dub plate, which is a one-off record cut into laquer, with (initially) all the advantages of a normal record, but they do wear off pretty quickly. Most mastering studios do dub plates, but some are pretty expensive. A “reasonable” price is about 35 for both sides of a 10”.

This is less important than the actual steps of getting the record made. You need a good mastering studio if possible with a sympathetic engineer, who doesn’t either consider intense and noisy music as something “wrong”, or is too lazy to spend some time to get the master right. More or less extreme music has very low as well as very shrill frequencies which are the most difÞcult to cut. This situation has improved a lot in the last few years as engineers have been challenged by ever more demanding producers. Nevertheless be on guard, don’t be shy, complain once too often rather than not often enough: the committing to laquer will determine how your record will actually sound like. You will also learn a lot about frequencies and music/technology. A good demand to make is to get your tunes cut at about +6 dB. Although it can be more expensive I recommend to attend the cut, you will also learn a lot about frequencies and music. The cut should cost about 200 (plus tax) at the most. Try to make sure you have a price in advance that covers the whole cutting process including the lacquer, rather thatn a price that depends on the time it takes to get the job done (unless you have too much money).

The next step is Þnding a pressing plant that will do the processing and the actual pressing for you. Not only price and service counts, but also where the records are supposed to be shipped. Recently prices for pressings have risen, but are still in a range that makes it possible to break even with a relatively small amount sold. This break-even point is hard to determine because it depends on the factors such as additional expenses for covers, as well as if you sell them all to distributors (generally the price for a standard 12” is 3.5 Euros), or if you sell them directly to shops or individuals (you obviously get a higher price, but will have to do more legwork as well).

TO PRODUCE A CD In theory you could just send a DAT or CD to the pressing plant and have it mastered there. I’ve done this in the past and had fine results, but some people strongly recommend to have it mastered in a special mastering studio beforehand. This is often not more expensive in the end, because the pressing plant in turn has no reason to charge you extra for the mastering. The pressing plant will then produce a glass master and press the CD’s. The advantage is that the printing is very cheap and you’re quite likely to end up paying as much or less compared to vinyl, and be able to slap much more profit on the product. How long the inflated prices for CD’s will hold is a different question.

Vinyl Mastering Studios London: Heathmans, engineer Shane, top quality, but tends to be booked up for weeks (currently 2 months for unattended cuts, more for attended), can be expensive unless you’re an old customer. London: Porky’s, engineer George, a veteran, good quality for good price. London: Kinetec - does anyone have some experiences?? Paris: Reverse, engineer Yann Dub from Reverse Rec. The only cutting place run by people from the hardcore scene. Good prices and usually good quality, but sometimes masterings had to be repeated (for free) due to technical problems. USA (Boulder): Aardvaark, can do specials such as inside out cuts and locked grooves etc.

Vinyl Pressing Plants France: MPO. used by a lot of labels because of fast turnover and relatively low prices. However there were a number of problems lately, such as a high percentage of warped records (which usually are getting replaced free of charge, but it means hassle and loss of time). I still use them at the moment. France: SNA. ? Rachael did the HWF5 7” there, price/service/quality was good France: DFI. ? They do 10”s and coloured vinyl Germany: Altona Media in Hamburg. Ad Noiseam used them for the recent vinyl release - a picture disc! - and quality/price was good. UK: Independent. ? UK: Damon. I use them sometimes. relatively expensive, thin vinyl, but good quality and fast turnover. Switzerland: Vinylium. ? they can’t (technically) make the metal plates from laquers yet, so they use direct metal mastering. I’m going to use them soon for some re-pressings so I’ll be able to say more in a couple months time. Czech : GZ Digital Media. Most people using them nowadays seem to agree that as long as the master is good, the quality of the record will be ok. Parasite paid 400 GBP for 300 7”s, but keep in mind that there is you are likely to be hit with a VAT bill when importing the records into the EU (or elsewhere). http://www.gzcd.cz Netherlands: There’s a pressing plant there - any experiences? same with Belgium Italy US: We heard bad things about United out of Tennessee, like they refused to press the next Broklyn Beats 7” because it featured George Bush with vampire teeth, so I wouldn’t use them. Price/quality seems ok, www.urpressing.com Erica in LA seems to deliver good quality, the price may be a bit higher than others, but they also do all sorts of coloured vinyl, shaped discs etc. The Praxis USA on Deadly Systems was mastered at Arkvaard and pressed at Erika, and I’m happy. i have heard alot of good things about archer out of detroit thier # is 313-365-9545

Agencies. Sometimes it makes sense to produce a record through an agency, the advantage being that they are bigger customers at the pressingplants etc, enhancing the likelyhood that your job will be done quickly and more hasslefree than if you show out of nowhere wanting to press 300 records. The disadvantage can be that the prices may be higher, but not necessarily, since the agencies often have lower prices at the plants and may pass a part of the gains to you. I used to use Key Production in London, but have been - after years of positive experiences, despite relatively high prices - quite disappointed lately, as they basically lost all metalworks of most Praxis releases (due to the pressing plant Adrenaline going bankrupt), when I very recently found out that even Praxis 27 and 32 were lost, I demanded free re-masterings as I obviously need to repress these titles, I was turned down without discussion. So I’m not going to recommend them. Reverse in Paris on the other hand have just closed down their cutting place in Paris and are relocating to Barcelona. More news as they come in.

Some people are using Gebr. Voit in Nürnberg, I say fuck them because they refused to print the cover of the Hecate album, saying it was ‘pornographic’. Don’t support them!

CD Mastering Ad Noiseam: As far as very noisy material is concerned (let's say "harsh" music), I would recommend the following: Syrphe in Belgium (www.syrphe.com), where most of the Ad Noiseam releases were mastered Malignant Sound Technologies (www.malígnantrecords.com) in the USA, for very, very noisy material Metarc in Belgium (www.metarc.com): same place as Syrphe, different people, similar quality.
