pc laptops

i'm using a toshiba m30 ... pretty good machine, though quite expensive.

If you want a laptop just for music producing, i'd recommend getting one of those big ACER laptop"s, which are quite heavy, but are actually very very powerfull because they have real pc hardware in it (7200rpm hdd, real p4, 533mhz bus, etc...) but their more like "transportable'" ... sinusjog/erzatz has one of those, and for lives they real sweet :)

otherwise i kinda like the new DELL series, with the new centrino processors :)

the Vaio are very expensive piece of hardware, and i'm not too much a sony fan.... (over rated and expensive)

Basically all it comes down to is : What is the main purpose of your laptop ?

If you want a laptop for many reasons, and music production is one of them, take a centrino processor, you'll never regret it .. and take a WideScreen, 15.2" wide screen, kicks ass ;) If you want a laptop only for music production (for the road and stuff) take one of those big acer things ... it's big, it's heavy, it's power-consuming, but it sure is powerfull. (and a 17" screen is kinda cool)

thnx ZARk, i'm happy you know some happy people that use the Acer17inch machine, i need a powerfull machine because the purposes will be :

1. Graphic editing ( my job)
2. Video editing - We are working on 5 shortfilms for the end of april.
3. Music & Sound productions - To be possible to work outside my studio .

My actual desktop will be upgraded too. I don't want to loose my Echo Mia soundcard - beauty. etc...

i used that big fat machine myself (not for long though)

and it's really fast, obviously for the heavy work your going to ask your machine that acer thing might not be a bad idea ... specially with a good 17" screen :)

but remember, it's not a laptop, but a 'transportable pc' :)

i've also been thinking of getting one, for my veejaying gigs, as that thing has a good hdd and a lot of power :)

I use a PowerBook G4. Ok it's not a PC, it's a Mac but I really love it. It is quite old now (2 years but model was near one year old). It's a 500MHz with 1Gb RAM. I have no problems to use Live 3 and Reason. Some times Live is getting some problems of memory (5tracks, effects,...) but with a new PowerBook it would be ok. The screen is a 15" widescreen, that's quite cool for Live but more annoying with Reason because the windows are more vertical. The only thing that is boring is the only audio out (no in). I use thus an maudio card. But the new PowerBook is equipped with one out and one in. I know Mac is more expensive but the quality is there. Really less bugs or problems with hardware (I have also PC to see it). I hope this thread will not start again the PC-Mac war as we can often see on internet forums... Just think about it, Mac is not a prehistoric computer and is not half-compartment of the world, it is worth the blow to look at.

I wanna buy a second hand sub-notebook (12") IBM ThinkPad X30. I found a webshop who sell this computer for 375€ (with 1 years warranty & free shipping).

I will use this computer for doing some nerd's stuff but I would like to use it for beginning in electronical music creation too.

The problem is... this computer is only a Pentium III-M 1,2 Ghz 512 MB ! For geeking, it is perfect but for make some music... it seems low...

Do you think I can make some live one day with a computer like that ?

PS: I know, my english output just sux.

it's really not enough, all ddepends of what soft you want to use, personnally i don't use my laptop anymore to make muzik ( centrino 1.7 and 1Go ram) coz with cubase and some vstis this laptop bugs ; not enough memory and proc. now i've bought a "normal" pc with dual core and 4Go ram and i use my laptop only for live with reason or ableton

I dont think, knowing the beast, that Bollzy want start with cubase...

Is the Bollzy configuration enough for a "light" use of abelton and reason (not in rewire mode) ? i Mean, not for live act but just for create music ?

He can do live with full track sampled into abelton...but sound card suck a lot...
