I recorded my drums a few times and although it sounds realy cool it's never as tight as I want it to. Now I heard (and saw) in pro-tools you have a Beat Detective- plug which quantisizes your drumbeats.

Does anyone know if there's such a VST-thing around for cubase?

Cubase SX can handle natively audio notes.

you have to tell it it's a musical track .. or something like that.

SX is VERY powerfull .. it can do things you have no idea off :p

edit: and i'm pretty sure it can quantize an audio drum beat ;)

I'm pretty sure there isn't a VST pluging that does the Beat Detective thing in SX, but i am sure it's possible to turn a midi part into a "rhytmic map". So you make a midi part, put the notes ( whatever notes, doesn't matter ) onto the places you want your beats, and SX turns that into a rhytmic map to quantize... other midi parts, so i guess it's possible to quantize audio with it too... Maybe if you make that midi part, then just cut the audio tracks right before each "hit" ( whether its a snare or a bass drum or whatever ), and then just quantize those tracks you just cut into pieces ( but didn't move ) to that rhythmic map...

Well, I have SX but I didn't find it. I don't want to cut up a drumbeat of 3'30". I ones did it, but it was a dayjob ... the result was crappy so I just played it again and left it that way. The producer on the Future Music DVD did it in about 3" with pro-tools. I prefer it that way ...

A little searching: Zero-X Beat Quantizer this should be the VST-version. Does anyone has any experience with it? Better ideas? Other solutions?

lol,dude;

if ya want results,put a days work in it,or use ambleton for the kiddies, :D

if ya record own stuff,play in time,or acurate,that helps too;

but for the really sx stuff,you need to be spending lots of time,lol

best thing,you start,with a acurate cut before the start,if thats good,you will have less troublelater;

then look for the arrow icon,there are 3 possibhle ways to use a pointer icon;

the one we need is the 3rd,pointer with timestretch;

then toohave some swing in it,you need to coorect the hitpoints(thats whats zark is talkin about)

hitmpoints are like dr rex slices;there ya can choose>mix,pluged,vocal,bla bla;,

but dude,what i'm saying in 10 min,takes up to 1 day,depends;

but the work will be remembered too,casualties of war;

I agree with Cqui... Beat Detective is handy, but i've used the tool, and it's not that good either... Depends on a lot of things, but you really shouldn't expect any miracles of it. Using your hands and ears takes the most time, that's for sure, but it's also the best and most gratifying way... Your choice...

well thanks fellas ...

I'm not the guy that can sit down and read a manual for more than 3 minutes ... sorry (but not feeling guilty anymore). I realy love making music and about putting time in this - the only thing I realy love doing is making music. That's why I only work half-time. I spend most of the day in my studio searchin' for the perfect kickdrummic placement or bassguitar- or synthsound. About my playing skills. I am not the best drummer around but I think it is far good enough for the music I want to make. (check a monolite concert, dude)

the problem I had was when I played a drumtrack on a clicktrack and added a midi-synced synth it was not as tight as I wanted it.

With the comment of Zark I searched the manual and within 10 minutes I synced the basdrum, snare and hihat - just like the thing I was looking for. Gating signals is also a very helpful thing here.

I think everyone makes music on his own way for his/her own goals, ... dude.

so u used detect silence and markers ?

or did you link to audio to midi notes ?

tell what you did so others who have similar problems can refer to your newly acquired knowledge ;)

This was my method ...

  • record your seperate drumsounds on different channels.
  • set the compressor and gate the signal so you only hear the hit of a basdrum, snare or hihat. (in this stage you don't hear the other hits, but you still see them in your wave, and when you calculate the hitpoints, you get thousands of 'em)
  • bounce this wave to a new track,export audio mixdown with one channel soloed (now you don't see the other hits of the hihat or the snare, when you working with the bassdrum)
  • add a new audio-track and import the new wave
  • calculate the hitpoints in the wave-editor and adjust them.
  • slice the beat
  • quantize the thing
  • do it again for the snare and hihat.
