sidechaining

yoou can do both...the most of the people put the sidechain on the bass volume but i saw someday in a tutorial a guy who put it on a frequency range in a parametric eq. it depends what you're looking for. the sidechaining is a quite good tool if you have some same frequencies riding each other in the kick and the bassline, in this case, sidechaining on a band in your parametric eq will make all this cleaner without affecting a lot the bassline. Personnaly, I always put the sidechain on the bass volume and the result is quite good but as I told you, it depend what you're looking for.

you can offcourse insert an eq if you want to emphasise certain parts of the spectrum, e.g. the attack or oomph of a kick. another neat trick i've learned is to work with ghost tracks for sidechaining, this is a track which is not routed to yr outputs, its only used for sidechaining, fr example duplicte yr kick track, nudge it forward something like 5 ms, make it a little shorter and use that track only for sidechaining, not audio. this way yr attack and kick in general will be much more clear and the bassgroove tighter. there's a very easy to use sidechaining plugin from lemonheads which is freeware. another tip is using sidech. not only for bass and kick, you could also do it with pads and kick or hihats and kick or even two percussion lines (e.g. hihat and another perc snd) to give the track more "pumping" feeling

Which sequencer do you use?

In FL it's easy as pie to sidechain anything to anything.  In ableton I use the compressor and a ghostkickchannel.

in renoise its a bit tricky to sidechain without vsts...its lame
