Record a dj set
Help neededIts not acctually producing help I need but dunno where to put thread
The thing is...
I have some dj equipment and I wanted to record a live set... I bought an external USB sound card (For mac osx.. hard to find) I've connected my master2- out with the micro-input of the sound card.. Then I open traktor DJ studio where I have changed the audio settings... Now I can record my set but I have to be very carefull whit the gain of my channels and master output..They have to be very quet to have a decent sound..
Now I tried again and it seems sometimes I have terrible sound.. waaay destorted while the volume bars where very small.. Then it sounds good for a while and in the end its just .. shhshhhhhhh ..
Its so frustrating when you think now it will record fine and then find out you have 30 min of shhhhhh.. 8(
Hope someone can help me out.. Is it the cables? mixpannel volume ? sound card volume.. dunno

do you use a mixer between your mac and external sound card? if you use them directly, you may have indeed a bit of fuzz sound. if you use a mixer, try buying a new one :) that was the problem with my old one. it will never be the clable, even if you have a cable from '60. (they where sometimes even better)
now, if you dont use a mixer, go like this
mixer -> sound card
Mac -> Mixer (for output sound i.o.w. the set you want to record)
Mixer -> Mac (for input recordings i.o.w. The sound you want to record)
if that doesnt help, just try to put your plugin in the MIDI area of your mac. sometimes it can be helped by that.
Sometimes it can be the cables, be sure to turn out your mixer when you change them, if it's the cables you'll hear very high frequenty squeeking sounds
the signal is too loud & deformed because you plugged it into the mic input. Mic inputs have a preamp built in because (passive) mics are very silent and need some boost to make the signal audible. If you send a hotter input (ie a line feed) into it you get horrific manglization of the signal.
Plug your mixer in the line-in & all should be fine.
edit: what soundcard is it?
thx for the replies... The problem is.. I bought that sound card because I don't have an input in my mac... thats the only reason... its a very cheap one from hercules , more for game surround or something but i only needed an input to my mac.. (via USB)
oh yeah and my mixpannel is not very old .. its also not very pro but its a JBsystems Beat4 proseries

I'll try to put it in the line in ... I remembered I tried that before and had no sound .. maybe that depends op the preferences of TRAKTOR... I just find it weird that if I record a set .. one song is good then the other is waay to loud then again not ... and I didn't change the volume...

I tried some stuff and I managed to have a decent 30 min. set.. only the last song is a little blured.. think in the end I got a little to exited.

plug the master out of your mixer in the line-in (connector nr 5 on the pic) then check your audio settings on the mac, make sure the line in is activated/volume is turned up. How do you want to use traktor in this setup? As extra pair of decks or something?
No I use traktor as a recording device... only in traktor I see the sound I make with my equipment.. In a small recording menu.. I don't use it for extra decks ... just to press record button.
the mistake I made was probably I connected my mixer with Mic in instead of line-in... I trie tonight

maybe easier if you use audacity. Its free a & very good recording/ audio multitrack/ sample editor. After you record you can then normalize, clean up peaks in the recording and much more.
