Getting Started
Help neededHi,
i have a question or two. I'd like to get started on producing. I've been playing guitar for a while now, and took some (very basic) piano classes. I've been looking into music and music theorie as a hobby which has brought me here.
I'm planning to purchase a piece of producing software (for example ableton, reason, ...) and a midi controller/keyboard. Now, the question is, which ones?
Concerning the software, I am seriously considering buying reason 3.0. I've been doing some research and, although it seem like a highly complicated piece of equiment, I am willing to devote myself to it. Secondly, but more importantly, the midi controller. I'm not quite sure about this one. Line 6 TonePort KB37 Korg Kontrol49
Of course, these are just a few of the posibilities. Perhaps someone can offer up some of his wisdom to help me. plz?
I have a line 6 pod xt live & Spider Amp II, which makes the toneport kb37 even more interesting, however, the korg kontrol might have a better integration and functionality (eg, more buttons and sliders n stuff).
To say something about the kind of music i'd be making: Varying between blues, rock, prog rock, space rock/psychedelic, ambient, (prog) metal, and a little bit of DnB maybe... who knows.
Anyhow, i look forward to the packs and bunches of replies heading forth my way!

About the soft...it all depends on what u want to do with it... If u look for something to make music with, i mean make sound with, to support the guitar, reason is a very good choice, it's not too complicated if u spend enough time on it and it has great potential since the versions beyond 2.0. For sequencing it's ok, but i don't like the built in sequencer, i prefer cubase for sequencing ( or nuendo,...) also ableton is good for sequencing, live playing, etc, very versatile and hands on control, and that's a great thing...
midicontrollers... korg is allways a good choice, never had complaints about korg products... midiman is also good and a bit cheaper maybe edirol(roland's budget line ) and u have tonloads of others as well...
i'd say reason+korg or midiman or edirol
In your case and with what's currently new and available i would go for this combination
Novation Xiosynth (midi-controller, real synth, midi in/out port, audi in/out Port (1x jack 1 xXLR, low-cost all in one solution) check out www.novationmusic.com (A bit like the KBtoneport you think of but with a real synth attached, a good one even... and at almost the same price... :O )
1 x SM57 (so you can mic up the line6 amp, or sing...)(but you propably have a mic already...)
Ableton Live 6.0 (or 5.0) (as sequencer, audio recorder, vst+reason-host, so you can play in long parts on guitar/songs and then put electronics to it...)
Reason 3.0 is a no brainer, in that it's so good everyone should have it...

reason is indeed great to start with because it has anything you need in one package and with its flexible routing options you will not outgrow it very fast.
however, i would not recommend reason to someone comming from a guitar background that wants to make rock/blues, since the lack of real audio recording (at least in the last version i checked).
if you want just want some backing tracks to play guitar with you could go with reason, if you want to record your guitar and build tracks from that i would recomend ableton live.

kbtoneport does enable me to run my guitar through it though... seems awfully tempting. Also, I'd primarily use it as midi keyboard, and because I already have a synth, it wouldn't be a big issue really.
And I'm definitely getting reason 3.0
