hi all! i'm upgrading my system and will be working on mac soon. i don't know shit about audio interfaces, so i'd like some help... my eye fell on the Apogee ONE interface (http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/one-features.php), as it has a slick design and superb quality (according to the reviews...). i know it's supposed to be a portable solution, but it has all that i need (i think). BUT it only has one 1/8" stereo output for unbalanced speakers. --> 2 questions here: *is it okay to connect 1/4" monitors through a splitting device connected to the 1/8" output on the audio interface? will that lead to quality loss? *why unbalanced cables? quality loss? Then i saw the Apogee Duet, which is more expensive, but has a breakout cable that provides 2 1/4" monitor-outputs, also unbalanced. So, as far as I knew it's always better to make balanced connections or through XLR, so i don't really understand why they used unbalanced outputs on the Apogees... Is that standard for monitors or something? Anyway, if you have the answer to my questions, please reply :) Suggestions for other audio devices are also welcome (my budget is around 3-400 euro, but preferably less as i only need a mic-, guitar-, monitor- input/output Also another question: do i need to plug my (usb-)midikeyboard into the device or directly into the computer? greets from a hardware-noob
i've got the Edirol UA-25Ex :) http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=970 It's affordable (€195 in keymusic) and i'm very pleased with it :)
interesting do you use mac or pc, and if pc do you use the 64bit or the 32bit os?

hi we use the apogee duet & must say the quality is outstanding ; top gear! the only difference between this & pro gear is indeed the balanced/unbalanced outputs (the inputs r balanced) in fact, when u send them directly to powered speakers, this is not a problem at all & intended u will c that the inputs on yr speakers (can) match the output voltage of this apogee (-10dBv).. remember : dBu=dBv grtz, jay ps. don't understand yr first question : will u split the 2 outputs into 4 (speakerz) ? or will u convert the 1/4" jack 2 1/8" (mini)jack ??

hmm.. not quite... dBu is for professional use, with 1volt as reference, while dBv is for consumer use, with 0,775 volt as reference. that's why on many powered speakers, you'll have the choise between -10dBv and +4dBu as input reference as for the apogee, off copurse you can split from one stereo 1/8" to 2 mono 1/4", but you should use good shielded cables, since unbalanced connections pick up much noise.
Doin the same lately ;)
saw that Apogee aswell and wuz intrigued by it, but i think i fell in love with this good lookin:

lookin forwart to yer revieuw
tiens, 1 dBu = the voltage level wich delivers 1mW of power in a 600 ohm resistor it is a reference of an RMS measurement (of voltage) the reference = 0.775 V (RMS) = 1dBv u = unloaded v= volt 1dBV = the voltage relative to 1 volt , regardless of impedance look 4 t difference...
