HD Crash...

i already inquired to a company about that problem ... but it goes quite fast to 2000€ basically because the whole operation has to be done in a very clean room (filtered air etc...).

i can't remember the company name; i got their mail somewhere if you still interested.

ps: thats the reason why i always buy ANTEC Psu's ... slightly more expensive but very secure. (and if it dies it won't shortcircuit ;) )

by the way, you don't know if the data on the hd hasn't been changed ... remember that data is written magnetically on hdd's ... so if high tension went to the heads you might have some data loss. (though i'm not an expert in these things and i'm pretty sure most hdd's would behave quitly differently to many things)

Mmm... I guess i'm f...ed. Well, can't do much about it, can i? I'll just have to live with it ( and quite frankly, it ain't THAT difficult :) it's just a pitty... ).

I don't know what went wrong with my PSU. I had it for something like 5 years now. My PC was as stable as a god damn tank, it's really strange it just got screwed suddenly. And i really don't feel like spending lots of money on a new system :( I guess i'll take a break from electro-land for a while...

Guess what, one of my HD's warranty expired 3 weeks ago... When i pass the gates of heaven/hell, i'll make sure to give a good hard kick in the balls to a certain someone.

doesn't change much :) It's not an hd failure but a psu failure that fryed the hd ... ie the hdd was exposed to abnormal conditions to which it was not designed :) If they can prove it, they wont pay for it.

it's funny because most people would go spending lots of money on a powerfull cpu or gfx card, and never look out for the psu , which is actually the most important piece in a pc ...

Anyway, very sorry for your loss ... only consolation might be that i might alert some artists here that will start to BACKUP their files .

a quick guide :

1/ Never backup on the same hdd ... thats not a real backup 2/ Avoid longterm backups on cdrw or dvdrw as they are not very "time stable" 3/ If possible try to backup on a distant computer (ie: one that isn't in the same room)

Personally i have two pc's that are synched every now and then (smartsync pro) on the important files (since one is a laptop, it's quite important to backup) Then every month more or less i burn a cd with important files (electrobel source code, graphic files etc....). And a couple of important files are hosted on the electrobel server. (yeah i know, you guys can't do that )

mmm... apparently, there's some hope. Seems like you can change the green card of your HD, the one to which you connect your power and IDE cable. So if i can get myself exactly the same model of HD, and replace my "HD motherboard" with the working one, maybe i'll recover my data. That is if my physical disks are still intact. You never know, do you?

So if anyone happens to have a crashed ( as in: physical crash )Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 120Gb, or a Maxtor D740X-6L of 60 Gb, i'll glady take it over :)

the maxtor 120gb is quite popular :)

mine crashed (is busy crashing to be precise) but it's still under warranty ...

ps: my 2005 resolution, never buy maxtor anymore, it's the 5th maxtor that crashes on me (or close relative) .... WesternDigital or Samsung or Seagate ... thats all i'm getting, even if it costs more ... tired of sending packets to Ireland...
