Hi,
I'm really bad at connecting my new gear.
Anyone here that has the same gear as i have and know exactly which cables go where? I have connected the midi-out of my keyboard to the midi-in of the Virus, and from the Virus midi-thru to my soundcard's midi-in. But now when i tap a key i only get my midi signal to Reason when the Virus is switched on. And Reason only records its own synths, not the signal coming from the Virus. I also have two audio cables from the Virus outs to the FX ins of my breakout box. Something is wrong here :)
I'm sure someone here also has a Virus Classic and can tell me exactly how to connect it so i can record its sounds seperately from the Reason synths.
As i'm a bit in the dark here now. Thanks for your help, and for not laughing :)
You made one mistake: you connected your virus' Midi-Thru, and not Midi-Out. You should take the Midi-Out and connect that one to your soundcard. Midi-Thru is what it sais: a Midi-Through gate, it just passes the MIDI signal on, exactly as it came in to the apparatus, and not as it has been processed by the apparatus, which explains why you get to hear the Reason synths, and not the Virus' synths.
Hope to have helped you...
Update Err... I made a mistake too :) You're never gonna hear your Virus' synths if you connect you Virus to your soundcard with via a Midi gate. Midi ( except in some rare cases ) NEVER transports any audio information. So if you want to hear your Virus' sounds, you should connect that device with a cinch cable to an "auxiliary in" on your Soundcard. That should do the trick.
Thanks,
Tried what you said by using midi-out instead of midi-thru on the Virus. That doesn't work cos then my midi signal doesn't get picked up by Reason. Only by the Virus itself. So only when i use the midi-thru port, the signal reaches Reason.
But the real problem lays with the audio connections. With my midi cables connected with midi-thru on the Virus, the midi signal gets to the Reason synths so i can hear them and record them. But...i also hear the Virus synths at the same time cos of the audio connections. However, the Virus doesn't send its audio signals to Reason, only straight to my monitors. That is why i hear both Reason synths and Virus synths together when i play my keyboard, but can only record the Reason synths. Somehow due to a wrong audio connection the Virus synth doesn't get picked up by Reason, therefor i cannot record it.
And is it normal that i can only get midi to my Reason program with the Virus switched on?
I am slightly confused. Man, i hate all this cables sh*t. :)
By the way do you also have a Virus?
midi thru : copies what it receives from midi-in ( But only works when the device is switched on) midi out : only has midi signal made from the device itself
so connecting in the thru is correct .. though it won't record changes you make on the virus.
Your audio connections should go from your Virus sound-out to your soundcard-in.
But i guess you connected both your pc and virus to a mixer then to your monitors ?
best practise is to connect your mixer out (not the amplified; but the line-out or rec-out) to your soundcard in ... that way you can record the instrument you want.
ps: nobody will laugh at you ... cabling a studio is a very difficult task
Now working with this type of setup, when you only want to hear the virus, you just mute your reason channel on your mixer (You could do similar working with midi channels .. but i don't know your midi keyboard and i don't know if the Virus works on a specific midi channel or on all)
Thank you very much Zark. A schematic, fantastic!! :)
I don't have a mixer yet though, at the moment i am still working without one. But (digital)mixer will come soon. My midi keyboard is an Edirol PCR-50. I have an M-Audio Omni I/O connected to my M-Audio Quattro soundcard. My keyboard is now connected to my Virus and then with midi-thru to the Soundcard.
I didn't know i could insert images in here. So i will make my own schematic op my current setup and post it here so you can see what is wrong. Thanks a great deal already.
And i'm glad i'm not the only one who's finding that cabling a studio can be a tough job :)
oh, another m-audio quattro owner ¿ :)
i have had only but miseries with that soundcard :'(
Okay, this is my setup. Find the mistakes why i can only record the Reason synths and not my Virus synth :) Thanks!
AAAARGL! I almost finished typing up this huge message, as my PC suddenly got stuck! sometimes you just want to throw it all out of the window... Mmm, i'm a lazy bum, so i'll just get right to the essence this time :)
Ok, first, once more, MIDI Thru just passes on the MIDI signal that's present at the MIDI In gate, and leaves it completely unprocessed. This means in your case that, through your Thru connection, your Virus only passes on the notes you play on your PCR-50 Keyboard to you PC. In other words, this is exactly the same if you connected your keyboard's MIDI Out directly into your Soundcard ( but without some extra delay caused by the intermediate Virus connection :) ). Second thing: MIDI NEVER passes on Audio, only MIDI Messages ( i say you should read some info on what MIDI actually is, it will make this whole situation clearer i think... ). Conclusion: you are never gonna record your Virus' sound through a MIDI connection. THUS you need an Audio connection. But you connected your Audio output DIRECTLY onto your monitors, which means the signal doesn't enter your PC, which in return means your PC cannot record it. Solution for this problem: Connect the audio output of your Virus to an Audio input on your Soundcard ( on your shematic i see you say your M-Audio Quattro has 4 ins, so use one of those ).
... Damn, i don't know how to paste any images into a message ... :) Well hell, just connect the Audio out of your Virus to and Audio In on your Soundcard, and record that signal. That way you can record your Virus synths. Through that MIDI connection you can record the notes you played ( and some other stuff, but just read some info on MIDI for that ), which can be quite useful too sometimes. If you don't want to hear your Reason synth playing, just mute that MIDI track ( coz' once again, you will record those MIDI notes in a MIDI track, and the Audio signal in an Audio track, don't forget those two have nothing to do with each other... in a certain way at least :) ).
I hope this time it'll work the way you want...
Thanks AnaesThesiA, your explanation makes perfect sense :) Now i'll have to see wether ir works or not. As i seem to remember i have already tried to use the Quattro audio ins. Anyway, i hope it will work now.
And to return the favour...to insert images into forum messages you must first upload an image to the Electrobel site. The same place where you uploaded your manga image :)
