I opened this threat after a talk on the wall about tracker music on the wall. For those who dont know what tracker music is, please read about trackers on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracker

the issue came up... as ElectricMullah made part of his deception, that some of his tracks that contained copyrighted materials were blocked in the remixes section. Mullah claims that the samples used are mostly very short and "mutilated", as he says. He  used Creative Sound Lab on Win95/98 for all of the tracks published on electrobel. "It´s all cut and paste ..." like the "Funkstörung-way-of-music"

The songs were blocked in the logic to protect electrobel from Sacem lawyers that usually look for "stolen" copyrighted material in new productions. The idea of a more restrictive politic for the remix section has been broadly accepted by electrobel users. Reaman signed for the rigorous application of the new rules. The discussion that has been lead about the issue can be found here: http://www.electrobel.be/forum/6/4087,0,0

My question is: "Wouldnt it be reasonable, to create a new tracker music section independently from the remix section?"

(IMAO) Tracker music is an important part of the electronic music culture.  Furthermore Tracker Music is not really the same thing than remixing (also IMAO), and it only uses very short, but although sometimes recognizable sample cuts.   If I open this new discussion, its not to continue the old discussion about the remixes, Sacem and copyrights as in the forum thread linked above, but to lead into a new discussion about the idea of a "tracker music section". As the forum lasts way longer as the Wall, I would appreciate multiple opinions about the subject. Thank you.

Harry made an important point on the wall:

hey but liquidd, i dont know why u keep refering to 'tracker' music, a tracker is a program.. i mean he could've easely used cubase or FL to cut his copyrightprotected loops.. anyway, i'll reply on yr topic once i am soberer Image

Well Harry is right... there's certainly a way to reclass or disguise these songs in other music genres... but is this the right way to deal with the issue?

Mullah didnt want to "cheat" by deleting the references to the original songs from the song description, as he meant that claiming songs with samples from other songs as one's own, would really be "theft".

eh liquid...you confuse me a little...i don't think that there's something as 'trackermusic'. If you want to make a section 'trackermusic', you can also erase all other sections and make only two sections (trackermusic-sequencermusic). A tracker is, just as harry says, a program. It just works different then a sequencer...btw. most (all?) electronic music in the beginning 90's was trackermusic. You can also use copyrighted loops in a sequencer so i don't really get your point (or is it really me who is too wasted?)

yes... you're right I might have gotten on the wrong way...  what I wanted to say is... that what i called tracker music is mostly based on short samples out of copyrighted music... just a the music as it is produced/performed by artists... such as funkstörung and the idea was to find a way to deal with the music made with a tracker without : -pretending that theres no copyrighted stuff inside even if there is

  • banning all these songs from ebel from the beginning because there are 0,5 to 3 seconds long samples out popular music songs... official speaches and so on.

for me it's easy... if it contains recognisable elements (how long they may be....) it shouldn't be in any category on electrobel. The whole copyrightdiscussion was not to have any (or keep it to a srict minimum) of those fragments on ebel - so if it's not allowed in remixes it's useless to have another genre where it IS allowed.

claiming that every sample (hihats, BD, crashes, etc.) is copyrighted so all music contains copyrighted material is maybe true, but it's about the parts that could be recognised and thus penalised by copyright-protection organisations...

I used to make music with fasttracker 15 years ago... so I saw this as trackermusic.. but apparently it isn't if I read the wikipedia-item.

Seems a bit silly to make a separate section for this imo, a tracker is basically a sequencer that allows you to use samples AND midi, you can make any kind of music with it. They're just a tool, like any sequencer.

edit

just checked the other reply's, looks like i'm just an echo  echo       echo        echo             echo
