Hi everybody !

I would like to know how to make a nice sounding continuous acid line, that make music go strong, i don't know if you really know what i'm talking about, but you all heard it ... just tell me something like "put a Subtractor with both generators on, the first is a sawtooth wave, the second is "15", octave 4 for first, 2 for second, then make the filters go up and down in BP 12 for the first while the second filter goes up from 12 to 56... " something really technical and detailled :) or just give me a small .rsn example file :) i defintely would thank you :)

you need resonance ;) that's for sure ...

Acid appeared when the TB303 came out ... download a Tb303 emulator (like the one by Properlerheards, forget it's name...)

and try it ;) now if you want to make a coke line ...

you put a little bit on a flat surface, you take something like a credit card and you ....... :D

That's not entirely correct. The TB-303 was originaly designed for guitarists to be used in combination with the TR-606 to acompany them. When it came out nobody wanted it. The sales were terrible. That's why there were less than 20.000 made. This was anno 1983. At the end of the 80ties, a TB-303 could be found in every pawn-shop for peanuts (50€ or less). Young experimenters who didn't have tons of cash bought these cheap boxes and started messing around with them. Instead of trying to immitate a bass-guitar with it (a 303 really sucks bigtime in this field), they turned the resonance up, played wacky semi-random patterns. In combination with cheap 2nd hand drumboxes, on which they played housy-patterns they switched in real-time, they tweaked repetative patterns on the TB. This became a new genre that was called Acid-House for some reason.

If you wan't an acid line, you need the sound of the TB-303 (alternatives : SH-101, MC-202). Unfortunately a real 303 is rediculously expensive today -I got mine last year for 900€ with a midi-convertor and that was a bargain. So unless you have the cash for it, you'll need an alternative. Rebirth is OK, but it's too clean and flat compared to a real 303. Still I think that Rebirth will be the best alternative on the software-front, since the rest of the emulators doesn't even come close.

BTW. The thing that made the 303's sound is the the internal step-sequencer and especially the 18db-low-pass diode ladder filter. On 90% of the analog synths the filters are self-oscilating, but the diode-ladder filter of the 303 does not self-oscilate on higher frequenties.

If you would like to recreate something 303-like with a modular softsynth or something like that, you will need a simple square- or saw-oscilator, an 18-db LP-filter and a basic AD-envelope that variably (with the env-mod knob on the real 303) modulates the filter.

If you want things a little more hard-acid, try putting distortion or overdrive on the 303 and let it scream!

Listen to some of my tracks if you wanna hear the real deal (mostly with distortion from some cheap Boss-pedal).

I see ! i listened to all your recent and acid traxx , darkQ, and your acid tracks are exactly what i call acid ( you say normal, cause it is acid, oh yes, sorry ).

Anyway, i will mess around again with reason ( and maybe rebirth if i find it :p ) in order to make something cool and as energetic ( but certainly not as good as original hardware, but i think i won't have money for hardware for a few years :) )

Thanks for explainations, darkQ and ZaRk, didn't know all these :)

PS : if someone has already made good acid sound with reason only, please tell :p

ok

acid well the power of the tb-303 lies in multi things. first of all, and most people don't realise this, there is a glitch in the internal sequencer wich give a tb-303 that certain groove. then obviously, the filter section wich is unique to every machine, so also for the tb-303. and also the glide fuction.

so ... its undoable

jadi jadi jadi, slaphitbonk

ok ok a reason patch eh?

load a subtractor. connect a matrix. set both waveforms on square (or saw if you want a saw line, the tb-303 had a square-saw switch). set both to - (minus) set oct for osc1 to 3 set oct for osc2 to 2 set mix to 3 o'clock I forgot this earlier: the tb does not have a hard synced oscillator, so it de tunes a bit now and then, very subtly. so if we wanna emulate this: set lfo2 rate: 10 o'clock set lfo2 amount: 9 o'clock and mode to phase there feel that subtle shifting? enable filter 2 and set to 97 (aprox. this is because the tb filter has its limitations, if we want the sound right, we do it right) set triggermode to legato turn up portamento as desired (this gives that glide effect) filter and amp as desired (I do think the tb had much les buttons so if you realy want it perfect, do some research :) )

and of course filter one -> play around with these during the song !!

cool effects are distortion and/or delay

so lets us hear what you did with the tips ...

nope, no article

this is not a very good patch, but it gives the impression of a real tb. I don't want to go all purist and claim I have the perfect 303-subtractor patch

I'd be glad to post some links about stuff like this if I find them ...

also, a typical acid feature is weird pattern lenghts. in Reason try playing with the matrix pattern lenght and try speed 1/8t. it gets sick after this

acid because it cuts your ear

house, because its a variant on the sound played at the 'warehouse' club. I'm not entirely shure but I think it was in Detroit, could be Chicago for that matter though ... Later people would go the record shops and ask for (ware)house records because the names where still unkown.

When I was a student, I had that problem too. If you are creative it is not necesarily a problem, because you don't really need all that hardware, you'll just start buying it automaticaly once you have the money for it and it becomes an adiction...

Hey, if you would ever want to play with a real 303 or sample it, you can always drop in if you want... no problemo with that. If I have the time, my doors are open.
