Apple to sell DRM free mp3
General discussionThat's it, EMI and Apple have announced that they will be selling DRM free MP3 files encoded at 256kbps.
What this means ? no more drm hassle from the itunes aac format. If you are an ipod-only user, this wouldn't seem trouble for you, but for people who buy an audio file and would like to play it on the machine they want, this is finally becoming "normal".
Personnally i'm still a "buy the hardcopy cd" kinda guy, sometimes i even buy the vinyl version, which i usually encode in mp3 for listening outside of my home. The new mp3's sold by itunes will be more expensive, $1.29 instead of $0.99 . Will just have to see how expensive they sell an album .... probably around 12 or 13 $ .. this is still way cheaper than the hard copy. but i do enjoy the jewel case and the printed booklet...

They also announced higher quality mp3s. I wonder what they mean by this. Would be dope to have 256kbps mp3 for 1.30$!

it's in the article, 256kbps mp3 :) instead of 128kbps aac
was to be expected...
i am still not one who will pay money for an mp3 file, no matter the resolution...(i might be persuaded if it's for supporting some ebel musicians, but there it stops)
I like the totallity of a concept-cd, the music, together with the artwork of the cover and the booklet, that's the charm of it...
I know it's the new ' rage ' to put everything in mp3, but selling it at those prices is still rip off imho...
mp3 is a great format to spread your music over the net fast, but buying it?

I would say that it is a good news and bad news. Great that they have abandonned this stupid drm + aac format system. But why the fuck increase the price? 8o 10 euros would be the max price that i would pay for an mp3 album. I think it is just a short term strategy : they have the monopol of the drm-free emi catalog so they take advantage of the situation. We just have to wait the competition to expect reasonable prices.

they are offering mp3 versions, but if you don't mind the drm, you pay cheaper :) you pay for the eventual leeching of the non-drm tracks :)

Why is that stupid? Its also less cheap because the quality is higher. So : good quality and no more copy control and it will be cheaper than bleep! (1.30$ instead of 1.3€).

It s 9.99 euros for an album on bleep. Zark was talking about 12,13 euros on itunes but nothing is sure, it is true. So wait and see
