Buy the Computer Music magazine. The best magazine with every month a dvd or cd full of demo + free vstplug's, a lot of royalty free samples, audio software etc... for mac & pc. The CM plug's are great and becoming standards.

i would advise you not to fill up your vst folder with free plugs... having hunderds of them will probably make your system quite buggy and having thousands of options can realy kill a cretaive flow.

experiment first and then choose the ones you like and get to know them properly seems a good tactic. i also use ableton and i mainly stick to the built-in effects, exept for mastering.

Since when does the number of plugins you put in your VST folder affect your system? I'm having loads of em, and they all have their own nice little folder, so i know where i can find which plug/group of plugs, and everything works fine, and nothing is buggy. It's the ones you load in your project that affect your system, not the ones in your folder.

Just make sure to defragment your HD a lot, otherwise you'll soon find your system gets slower.

i agree with anaesthesia on the last subject - only the ones loaded into a project are cpu-eaters

with those two you can do some very pretty stuff

there's also the albino demo (but has an annoying noise repeated from time to time)
