Really, that's very, very debatable.

It depends on what you think Sabam can do for you.

When it comes down to copyright, you own the rights to everything you create as long as you don't sell or give away those rights somehow. So if that's the issue, you don't need to join them.

Sabam is basically an organisation that want to protect artists and their copyrights in Belgium, and you have simular organisations in other countries as well. The protection of those rights is typically done by registering artists and their songs, and by demanding fees from everyone and everything that wants to play music.

Parties, bars, cafés, radio stations, television, they all have to pay Sadam.

The idea is to register how many times a song gets played on parties/radio etc, and then pay the artist according to their airplay a percentage of the gathered fees.

The problem I have with this is that they use recordsales (Top 40) etc to determine who gets a piece of the pie, which means that Clousseau will be getting some of your cash, even if the money came from a drum'n'bass party.

As a smaller underground/electronic artist you don't need Sadam imo.

If you plan on becoming the next K3... you might wanna join them :)

advantages:

if you get airplay on some selected radios or are released at many copies: then you can get some royalties and it can be quite interesting. it pays also for your subscription etc etc the label releasing your stuff will have to pay +/- 250€ to press 500 copies of 5 tracks. dont remember how much of those 250€ you get back, maybe 190-200. not sure.

if you send your tracks to yourself in a sealed envelope, you can prove in court that they're yours, if you record them in software you automaticly have a date regarding your song, but i'm talking phill collins stuff that brings in much cash, however making something,another getting the credit is really a nightmare i think. :-)

This was tried in court and it was argued that the postage stamps can easily be falsified and content altered, if memory serves, the judge agreed and they lost. Registered letter is NOT a waterproof copyright system. I could send myself a registered enveloppe now with a copy of this page, then in 5 years file a lawsuit stating it had some massive tracks.

Now, a VERIFIED sending through DHL or new poney express clearly stating the name of each track and a courier actually signing that package WITH the contents at a given date, THAT might prove to be worth something in court. But if you are going through those lengths, you might as well subscribe to Sabam.

The biggest reason why i was wondering to join them is because some labels are asking me to send demo but i'm scared they gonna steal In the past years a track of me hosted on formal www.worldinvaders.com have been stolen and altered But you can clearly hear my track in it Can't proof a goddamn thing because i can't proof anything It was made with my older laptop(pc) Don't have any files of it due to a crash That's why i've purchased me a mac. Lately I get the question if i have my music on Beatport Does anybody know if you can join beatport and sell tracks even when you're with Sabam?

Beatport only deals with labels, not individual artists. It's somewhere on their webpage.

And on the whole send yourself your own track. If you send it "aangetekend" then you have to sign when you got the letter. That has legal value. Lawyers use it like all the time.

You signed for A letter. Nowhere does it state what is in it with registered mail. Otherwise, send one letter and you can proclaim for 50 years for all your tracks they were inside of it in case of problems.

Lawyers use the registered mail as proof they corresponded with someone; Content can NEVER be proven, so it can still sometimes be a problem

Yeah i know what you mean, some people say it's waterproof, some don't I know a girl who's mother is a lawyer And she told it's completely safe and ok.On the other hand some other people (like you Jemenfish) tell me the opposite So it's a difficult descision for me to take i guess ;-) But I don't understand that Sabam wrote me and some other people told me that you can proof it that it's yours (midi notes,files like ableton, logic etc...,if you've putted it somewhere online) If this is thrue, what's the point of sending a sealed enveloppe or joining Sabam?
