I'd like some thoughts on the Yamaha tx16w sampler. I hear it's aweful to use because of the original os. The Typhoon os was a serious improvement. I also hear different opinions on the sound quality. Some say it sounds good but lo-fi, others say it sounds crap. I don't mind lo-fi sound though but it needs to be gritty in a good way, not in an aweful way.

So, any thoughts on this piece of hardware? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the chance to play with one a couple of months back. Albeit that it has a bitching operatingsystem, don't know which one it was... The dude that had one had spend the best of his time since the eighties on making small enough samples ;) By the time you have made enough very small samples this machine works and sounds like any eighties 12-bit sampler... nothing special, but nice for crunchy electronic drums... special mention goes to the individual outs/8-part multitimbral functions which provide for a nice drum-machine-with-special-effects-on-each-channel-kind-of-stuff and some of the digi-filters are quit nice

for 40€ it's a good buy as collectors prices go for around 200euros but on the other hand there's nothing this piece of kit can do that can't be done with a computer and some software

conclusion: nice crunchy percussives sampler to have but a bit on the long tooth for todays studios
