Sabam

Personally I have no interest in joining sabam as long as they keep working the way they do. There is nothing wrong with wanting to protect your music, but at what cost? Also i have no trust in thos people that go around the country to collect, i mean : how the hell are they going to check if your music gets played or not...?If you are not a big name,I guess they can't find that out. Personally the fact that many people from around the world download our music, I see that as a motivation, a thumbs up, caus that means people like what we do.

Off course on the other hand it would be extremely cool to earn a little money with your music, so on that point it's a bit double... If i would know that sabam really is about protecting our stuff, I might be tempted for some tracks, but they are only about making money...

So personally I won't join as long as they don't change their ways,I think the way they target small party organisers and stuff is downright criminal...

My point of view... 

Well, I think there should be something like Sabam, because CC and whatnot is just, well...not really a lot to stand on once you achieve some success. I have my doubts about any legislative basis you stand on when you can simply register on a site and start putting songs like here on electrobel - a copyright organisation asks for your real name and a signature, and that's a lot more binding in my book.

The problem with Sabam is just...sabam. You need to fill in 121 outdated forms to get one song published, and another 73 to get it on the radio.

After each show I run myself, I need to send compelte playlists for each and every sabam band I used in the 2 weeks after the event; I need to pay Sabam prior to the event, but if you don't send the playlists, then the artists don't get paid and they sit on the money.

Needless to say, most organisations pay the sabam fee for the event because otherwise yo ucan have a LOT of problems in case of control, but sending complete playlists? Especially at festivals etc., mnah. And they know it. I believe Sabam made 79 million Belgian francs due to this kind of practices a couple of years ago, but it's still considered a non-profit organisation. Mbluh?

Same goes with releasing a cd; Last time I filled in their forms, 78' vinyls were still an option.

Probably that, in the future, music will be free. artists will earn money trough events and sponsoring and we will assist to a generalisation of timesharing i mean like these special events where artists play something special in studio for the web or simply intimist showcase. We observe already that, let's take some examples: the mixes of silent block studio (hi guys) and the associated system of www.frequencyradio.org, live sessions for the new project of Jérôme Colin: www.radiolibre.be, and the concept of blogothèque: the take-away shows ou les concerts à emporter which put artists in everydaylife situation to sing their songs, this one of Arcade Fire is exccellent - they play in the elevator and between their fans... http://www.blogotheque.net/article.php3?id_article=2868

if it s played on the radio you don t get money from sabam, it s simim that handles radio stuff

Simim beheert rechten voor de muziekproducenten. De rechten voor de artiesten worden beheerd door Uradex. Voor de auteursrechten is Sabam de meest gekende beheersmaatschappij. (uit de site van Simim) maybe someone can translate this? 

fact is that electrobel can get in trouble if sabam-registered artists post their songs here, they might claim publishing fees from ebel...

And you think they won't have a problem with those 500 remixes of popular songs in the remix section? Top of the page gives me Nirvana, Kraftwerk and nine inch nails remixes...I'm so surprised to find out that's creative commons territory lol.

as i said before to zool artists should come together and talk about a solution cos its clear there is NONE in the interest of the artist really.. since sabam is just an organisation like any other .. anybody could start an alternative..but it would be good if its something By and For artists.. not to fill those profiteurkes their pockets

example: a party we did in the past sabam asks about a 1000 euro.. we say like wtf.. we threathened to call the police and two minutes later its 300 euro...

thats all i have to say.
