Hi
I want to start making a liveset in Ableton. I searched a lot of forums and googled for hours but I still don't know how to start.
I make my music in Fl studio and I know the basics of ableton..BUT i'm searching for a practical way to do it.
For example: If I export 1000 patterns from FL studio to a .wav file, I need a 1000 buttons on my keybord to control al those parts in Ableton which is impossible, right?:) Or should I export larger pieces of music and than make transitionparts between those pieces, but if I do it this way you can't improvise with effects and stuff because you only have a couple of .wav files...
So...what is the most common way to make a liveset?
Thanks in advance..
Well it's not easy when working in FL AND wanting to do lots of stuff live in live. All depends on how live you want to get. I have the same problem. Untill now I rendered 5-8 large wavs of every song, each a category (bass + kick, snares, leads, efx etc), sent them thru 8 outs and live pa'd them. I had my hands full of tweaking eq on my mixer but it's not live enough.
SO, to make a long story short here's my plan:
Now there's a challenge and a weeks work :))
i render loops of individual instruments (beat, bass, guitar,...) for each song part (phrase, break,...). that allows you to improvise the song structure while playing. and i tweak the fx live. btw, you don't need a button for each of the sample clips hé. you can navigate through the clip view and trigger what you want (individual clip or whole scene) with your computer's mouse, keyboard or a midi controller.
thanks for the quick replies guys! It's clear that THE way does not exist..but these hints will certainely get me started..
Ok here goes - my technique to use FL STUDIO for live use... It was kinda obvious for me to do it like that. Allthough, I never managed to find anything on this FL-technique on the net.So prease yourself lucky,I warn you, theres a downside to it.
(I warn you,I like to keep things as simple as possible so I can play as much as possible with Eq and fx's)
So...first I export different ELEMENTS of one track; like for ex. the bass of the melody, the synths and the beats (and all other things wich differs from track to track, like interludes ,long soundeffectz, or just additional recordings that go with a certain track.)
I export it all in mp3 files (wav is better but way heavyer and the quality of mp3 is just good enough to play live imo) Then, you just have to put each ELEMENT (or "long" sample) in an audio clip Then you put all the ELEMENTS of one track in that under-part of the playlist in that way that they all start at the same time. Like that you can easely add more and more tracks to your playlist. Every tracks startpoint is then settled (could be minor point not to be able to trigger next track when you want during your live and do some impro on what track next and such, but I see it as a good point, just to have your tracks where you want them and not having to trigger them)
Next is ,I put each ELEMENT (audio clip;like f.example all the "beats"-samples) in the first FX channel...next element in the second FX channel and so on.... so I have up to six FX'es on each ELEMENTs channel plus 6more on the master. (linkin it all to the uc-33)
For equalising I use the 3 faders of the FX equaliser (three faders down right in the FX box.)
Big problem is that after you put something like 30 minutes worth of mp3 in one project,FL doesnt recognise your samples no more, its then like an empty audio clip (but maybe if there are wav. donno, should try that)
So what I did 3 times now as a solution,is open FL 2 times, put the first 30 minutes in the one,and next 30 minutes in the second FL. So I have to switch from the one to the other during my set,but thats not too hard;end of first 30 minutes is an ambient piece as an interlude so...I play the SECOND 30 minutes in the SECOND FL when the ending of the FIRST 30 minutes is allmost over...then when the FIRST 30 minutes are over I just close the first FL. And when in part2, for midi stuff you just have to click "enable" at the midi device wich normally would be disabled because of the first FL running the device first.
People asked how I was gonna do my live and I explained them all this but not somuch into details...most of them sayd I had to use ableton live...I installed it,tryed it for 3 weeks and in that time I COULDNT(!!!) achieve what I wanted/could achieve with FL for live use... Im verry verry confortable with how I do it even though FL isnt really made to do that. Im verry happy on this technique so far.
Maybe there should be a program that would be made just to play different layers of wav or mp3 at the same time and where you could link vst's to each ELEMENT and to the master...and where each track (wich then consists of different layers/elements) could be automaticely be triggered to play one after the other... Dont now yet if that exists. So that would be my question. cheerz and good luck
not sure i understand entirely but to me it sounds like it could be done with clever/advanced routing in Live.
@Skip: interesting technique you have there..about the impro-thing..check the playlistoptions (icon topleft in playlistwindow) if you click "live mode" on, you see new icons before each pattern, you can trigger them by clicking the icon(standaardmode is loopmode, if you click on them with your right mousebutton they change to "play ones" mode)...maybe you knew allready, but if you didn't, it's fun to experiment with:)
Only thing that is fucked up about your technique in my case is that I can't open FL twice. For some reason my soundcard can only provide sound for 1 musicprogram at the time, so if I open it for a second time it gives an error. But for a very short set it's a good solution since I'm not an advanced abletonuser:)..Thanks!

yes ,the "live mode" didnt really experiment enough with that...thanx for mentioning ,I think Ill fool around with that today. I read a couple of times that this feature isnt really used by the users. So heres our chance to give it a try. I might give some feedback on eventual achievements with that live feature.
Only one? strange...
@dtr.....I still have Live installed so Ill check that too, thx!

Skip, it's nice you try to achieve playing live with FL but face it dude: FL just plainly sucks for playing live... The fact it flips out on several large wav files (and thus you have to use mp3!!) says enough.
Your setup with the large files to seperate efxchannels with FL is done in ableton in a few minutes actually.
btw: When you think about it: why not playing large parts in ableton and use FL in rewire for playing live? Will check on that :))
and Skip: referring to your question: read my setup in my previous post. If you look at it and ellaborate: sure you can easily set up a configuration like you want in ableton with elements as you call it routed to whatever you want, when you want it and at what speed you want it. But trust me on the not using FL ony for live: it sucks and will get you get stuck eventually. I'm the biggest FL fan when it comes to producing but for playing live, you can't but admitt that it just plainly sucks...

it doesnt suck (besides having to open it twice), it wasnt a problem to do it like that for my first 3 lives so far. I think its cool to just go this far in using FL....so for me it would be the oposite of sucking(....blowing?)
What would be the problem using mp3?(never had complains on my sound or anything so...no sucking here dude,I was allways satysfied with my live sound, with some good live-equalising,who cares if its wav or mp3)
But I will check those Ableton-FL in rewire-possibilities Never used rewire before so heres my chance.
thanx again I apreciate the good info! chrz
