Ableton Live 7 selected questions

5° - The sound is sent to the effect (say return A) then returns to the track. So you've got the dry sound plus the wet sound ontop. This is how send effects are working. Make sure that the send effect's know is on 100% wet. You will have to tweak the "A" knob from the track to play with effect volume.

With send effects you will always have 100% of dry sound + any % of effect you want. So if your "A" knob from the track is set on 0, you will only have 100% dry sound. If it's open all the way then you'll have 100% dry sound + 100% wet sound. this is also why the volume increases.

set 'audio to: sends only' to go only to the return, not to the return And the master, or put your fader down and your 'sends' on 'pre' instead of 'post

The way I use ableton the most (very basic explained :)))

I start jamming with some clips in the session view; making some loops that fit well together, testing different variations and fx.

A simple but verrry handy thing I discovered waay too late in Ableton was the ability to just drag a clip from the session to the arrangement view and back.. (you just have to drag it on the arrangement/session view button for those who didn't knew :D)

this is very handy for editing loops for example; cut-&pasting in the arrangement view, then consolidate them (group them) and drag the clip back to the session view as a variaton of the original loop

When I have made some basic loops and variations I press record and start playing around with them and the fx..

When the recording is done, I go to the arrangement view, and start editing, taking the best parts, adding stuff, doing a lot of minor cut and pasting and building some structure,etc..

When I have build my whole song structure I consolidate each track again, grouping all those little pieces together, and split them back in only the most important parts (intro verse chorus etc) of my song >>> then I drag the whole song back in the session view; the cool thing is when you do this ableton keeps the structure, and you then have your structure on different scenes, for example intro = scene 1, verse = scene 2, etc..

now I have the most import parts of my song on scens in the session view.

To just play my whole song one scene after another. I had set each clip to launch to the next after 8 measures, but then I had to use silent clips for the silent parts if you know what I mean :) and you totally see no structure when all tracks contain clips on each scene..

So I just start scenes manually.

I hope this explanation is a bit understandable :) and useful to anyone

there are probably a lot of other solutions, tell me! I really like working with Ableton, discovering new things each day (a lot on the ableton forum and the ableton manual)

1- this is very much against the logic of live ( i.e. you use the session view to jam, or play live with looping clips); if you definately need to preprogram the linear flow of things use the arrangement view

2- if you double click a clip you'll see the clip view, here you can see looplenght, start point etc... alternatevely in the mixer the little meter gives you the number of beats (if it is not an exact number of beats its color will change)

3 & 4 don't know... but again when i realy need this i'd be using arrangement view

5 - check the dry wet levels for that

6 - sure, you can... but it is quite limiting to your enjoyment as a live performer..

(from your questions i'm not sure if you understand the difference between send effect and effects on a track master... look into that )

ok, so we're talking about ableton. I got two very stupid questions, I guess you guys can give me the answer in like the next post lol.

1. How can I reverse my clips (I link Audition achieve every clip I want reversed, but that is a lot of rendering, I just do not find how to do it in ableton)

2. When I made a beat with different samples (kicks, snares, hats, ...). Is it possible to merge them in one clip, so that I can put it in session view at once. Again I do this with rendering each loop I made and importing them again.

to reverse audio clips click on the 'rev' button in your clip view (sample display)

for the drum thing depends on how your drum was created, kick snare etc each on diffrent audio tracks?

you can route all the tracks to one audiotrack again and record this one

Skip, as I said, you REALLY REALLY need arrangement view. you're making it difficult on yourself trying to achieve that with long clips (whole song lentgh) in session view. Session view isn't ment for that. You can combine the two btw. just automate tempo and use horizontal long wavs, for starters.

yes, you can put as much music as you can possibly imagine in arrangement view without overload.  As I said, I think I once played live with a 5 or even 8 gb project using 5-8 32 bit float samples per song, without a glitch.

aha,big thanx again for the help bandarlog,really apreciate that you put some time to help a stubborn FL-addicted soul. Yes I was gonna combine the answers from both topics. (Well its not really like I wanna achieve everything in session view ,thats why I ask if it would be possible to use arangement view....swat.) Im gonna put some time in it soon.
