Dear all,
Hopefully by now most have read the dark contest formula that will run here on the electrobel site in coöperation with Je m'en fish. Musical work (one track per artist allowed) will be posted anonimously and a voting system will afterwards be made so that opinions can be given by song and by artist to avoid 'us knows us' policies. Fake voting and 'spamvoting' will be carefully monitored.
After some talk, planning and ideas formulation, we have decided with a couple of people we could push this concept a 'little' further. The basic guidelines:
-January to February 4th: Posting musical work anonimously.
-Mid to end February: Voting system + announcement.
-February to start April: Discussion with winner of the contest and a visual team for conception of visual support + sharing of views. Tracklist to be chosen by winner for a 30 minute set.
-April (presumably 12th): Live performance at BIFFF 2007 at Tour & Taxis. Live footage of performance + visual representation.
-April-May: Live footage of act will accompany the presentation of various official Je m'en fish videoclips at events. Opinions are gathered.
-April to October: 6 months of careful study and analysis of musical work, performance, and visual presentation of the artist. The visual artists (various and in discussion) include both live VJ's as well as videoclip producers for known musical/filmic projects. Visual projects will join the collective; Maybe the winner will too, I'm still not entirely sure.
-October 2007: Live presentation after refleshing the act + working out a suitable visual presentation + Live footage at Alienor event, Lille, France. Pictures opening day 2006: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jemenfish/sets/72157594307640042/
(Please note that the event will change location in 2007; Although the Palais Rameau was a magnificent work of art, it's a protected building that is normally closed to the public and hence, although 300 to 400 people were at this opening event, subsequent events on weekdays attracted only a small crowd).
-End 2007: Looking at the various new media emerging for musical/visual files, primarily online + maximum presentation of this work.
Thoughts and opinions welcome.
Although I am going to push the idea with our VZW/ASBL for the project, I will look into the possibilities of funding, sponsoring, etc. as well; Brainstorming is welcome. If I do not find any funding my options will be rather limited.
wow that sounds big!
i really don't know much about the funding and sponsoring thing though... in rotterdam we have an organisation called Popunie that promotes local musicians and events. but i guess you already know all the similar belgian organisations.

Yes, but my fundings are primarily for the electronica contest and Je m'en fish events through Europe. And some partners asked me not to run an electronica contest in 2007 due to all the regional rockraces. But one of my binders concerning this idea is already finished and will be posted next week.
But this is a new concept I have that is quite intertwining to different forms of art. I already had live paintings on music, or at the Alienor event I even saw some kind of electronical 'nodes' that you could attach and once you touched another person with 'nodes' it made some sound related to where you touched them, different for each person.
Personally I've always been interested in various styles working together and I think I can get this done; But if I want professional studio work and some of the producers I'm in discussion with, I won't be able to fund all that with Je m'en fish. Bifff and Alienor will work out, I'll invest out of my own pocket if needs be

(from my profession i'm naturally inclined towards the multi-disciplinary approach: technology+architecture+arts).
again in holland there is for example the V2, Montevideo & Waag Society organisations involved into this kind of arts.
i'm gonna ask around for tips for funding possibilities in belgium, i'll get back to you

.
or a live act, right? it has not to been only a dj set?
another question: the visuals are done with the opinion of the musical artist (conest winner)? so you mean they will interact and share ideas for the vidual presentation?

by "artist" you mean winner of contest, right?

I'm guessing that the winner will be someone able to perform live; If it is not perfect, that's an additional reason to accompany them in the right direction. Although if a really young or new artist would happen to win, then yes, we can see for a possible DJ-set only of their material.

Yes. My ideal goal is that we'd actually be able to produce a full-fledged videoclip (3-4 minutes) we could use at the end of 2007, but at BIFFF we'd already make a visual presentation to go with the artist (on a 3m on 6m movie screen, if my memory serves).
Although truth be told, possibilities to know exactly your budget by April are small, so I will probably fund this extra visual presentation out of my own. My initial idea is to bring the organiser of the Alienor festival over; He has been in the visual business for a long time and he's nice to work with.

Yes; The idea would be, after the presentation, that I would make a live footage of the artist; It gives a good image of capabilities. Then we have 6 months to produce some more 'finished' product with capable producers (although the live presentation is also in and out of itself already a nice bonus, since live video's often get you shows; One of the bands in the electronica contest already got 1 or 2 with my video :))

I don't know; Not everyone here plays live, but suppose one of them puts 1+ month into it and delivers a masterful track?
What's the general concensus on this one?
