Hello essés, no this topic isn't about how to master (yet again ;) )

A certain label asked me if I'd be interested in signing one of my songs to their upcomming LP Off course I said yes, and promissed them a mastered version before 21/01

prblem is: I can't master that well, I do my best and know some basics, and I cincerely hope they'll find it good enough (would be hartbreaking to know my song wont be on the LP becouse of my mastering)

I read a lot of shizzle on the web lately that you got to have bitch ass monitors to do a great mastering (well, I NEED a great mastering) and that mastering with headphones is just plain stupid...

Well: I only have pcboxkes (you know, 2 useless plastics mini things of crap) & a senheiser headphone, question is: Will this be enough? Or am I fucked? (I usally master with my senheiser, sounds OK imo, but stil...)

some explaining?

cheers

You have to know your headphones really really well and have really really good ears in order to pull off a good mix out of headphones only (but it has been done).  but mastering?  Naah...  Don't think that is possible.  I have monitors and do my own mastering for demos and uploads but it can't compete with the real shit.

i find that VERY hard to believe! heaphones are way too different in dynamics, stereofield and sound compared to even low budget monitors. i have a beyerdynamic DT770 and yamaha hs80m's, and i ALWAYS use my moni's for mixing and premastering, cause headphones are really not guud for that. try for yourself: mix and premaster on headphones, and then play it on a serious installation; you'll go "OMG :'( " and people say a lot on the internet; you don't have a clue in what conditions they did it. it could well be that it was done by a professional mastering engineer who knew the job for 30 years. i doubt that one of us will be capable of getting near the same result.

I'd say, mix your track as good as you're able with your headphone, and then play that track on a decent soundsystem, you know someone with a good soundsystem offcourse? Then you can hear the defaults, i don't think you're fucked at all, i got releases only mastered with headphone and no expensive speakers as well, hm offcourse no litlle pc boxkes, but they are not as the real monitors...Ciao +

make the best version you can and just give it away. if a label is interested to release the track, i guess they're serious enough to do their own mastering for the whole release, specially if its a compilation...

if you cant master, then dont do it. you'll maybe make it worse.
