you probably knew thednb.com as well, a great service that had to go down because it kept exceeding it's bandwith limits as it became (too) popular and known on the internet

one of the biggest costs for a website is bandwith, and one way to lower that cost is by using a distributed way of "sharing" or downloading those files,

I came across a technology a few months ago that would be suited for websites that want to publish content and control that content, but that would provide a more distributed way of downloading that content, and thus partly taking the load off the main server

mmh, this is a sort of p2p... I'm not too hot about that kind of system for electrobe, i've been thinking of doing some mirroring though.

• i've made enough implementation to support quota's on electrobel ;) making it possible to avoid excessive downloading/uploading. Though the issue hasn't come up yet.

It's sort of p2p but it's quite different (if not completely) from Kazaa, Gnucleus or Soulseek. As a user you can't really "share" a bunch of files like you do with the other p2p clients, and there always has to be a master server, which is ussually the publishers webserver.

Basically it's a single very small executable that does the download of the file. To download a file you have to use an url with that links to a file with a .torrent extention. The file is then downloaded from the primary server (yours) but also from all other users know to your server that are downloading the same file at the time.

This cuts down on your upload bandwith, and really takes the load off your server when a file becomes "hot" and gets downloaded by a lot of users simultaniously.

The client itself always connect to the master server before it starts the download, so it's still possible to track the number of downloads etc, something that's lost with other p2p clients.

I stumbled upon it while looking for a new p2p network, and after testing it I realised BT can't really be used as the typicall filesharing p2p app. But it would server great for a site like ElectroBel.

In case you get into bandwith trouble somewhere in the future, you'll know there is a possible solution ;)

But it this case it means you have to download a small program before you can download from electrobel? If I was a normal user of electrobel I would find it suspicous if I had to download an .exe first... In these days in everything is so called spyware, so i wouldn't download it...

• it'd rather it be directly accesible to anyone. cybercafe's etc... no "follow these instructions to be able to...." UNLESSSSSSSSS we put the flash mp3 streamer as a main source of listening .. then the downloading thru the BT system ...
